I'm planning a section hike in the Statton/Rangeley Lake area of the AT in late August/Early September, but want to avoid a collision with thru hikers finishing the Georgia->Maine hike. Will the trails be crowded at that point, and if so is there a good multi-day hike somewhere off the AT?

I'd say late Aug/early Sept. might be prime collision time with thruhikers.
They don't bite (usually :D).
Bring a tent and camp away from shelters.
If you want to do the AT and do mountains at that time, the White mountain thruhiker rush should be about finished up.
Then there's also the Long Trail (more rugged than most of the AT - at least the northern 1/3). It's usually less crowded (and has more of a wilderness feel) than the AT at that time of year.
