Hey!

I'm a 22 year old guy who is looking into doing a thru-hike in 2006. I was born in Canada, and have lived in the UK for the past 11 years. Is there anyone planning that for ahead yet? Also, does anyone have any advice for a useful book to read as a starting point?

Thanks for any advice,

Jeff

Jeff,

The Appalachian Trail Conference (ATC) maintains a web site that will probably answer a lot of your intitial questions, this link will take you to the section that will get you started: http://www.appalachiantrail.org/hike/thru_hike/index.html . Of course, we at WhiteBlaze.net will be happy to answer specific, or not so specific questions that you might have.

If you want to read about gear for an AT thru-hike, I suggest "The Enlightened Thru-Hiker" by yours truly. Admittedly, this might seem a bit self-serving but I really think it provides the best discussion about the spectrum of gear choices available to an AT thru-hiker. It is specific to the AT and thru-hiking! No general discussions about hiking or how to use a compass in this book! All A.T., all the time. Check out www.enlightenedthruhiker.com (http://www.enlightenedthruhiker.com) and read an excerpt to get a taste.

Yo Jeff!

Might i suggest a website...which features many practical hiking tips:

www.ModelT.netwww.ModelT.net (http://www.modelt.net)

Model T also has written a book: "Walkin' On the Happy Side of Misery"
about his adventures on his 3 A.T. thru-hikes!

Good luck with yer hike!

read some Ray Jardine, Model-T definitely, or On the Beaten Path. BookBurner, I'm going to have to check out your book. Heck, you could also just go to trailjournals.com and read peoples' journals from their hikes.
