The developers claim this "Nanotech" filtration system can provide perfectly clean water for less than 1 cent per liter. It seems to have promise as a hiking filter, but I can envision tea bags on the ground around every water source:

Personally, this Homemade ultralight one micron backpacking water (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is7X6JS9vUo) filteris simpler and more cost efficient.

For third world applications, I'm a fan of bio-sand filters (http://www.cleanwaterforhaiti.org/Design/HTML/filter.html)
