I understand regarding most things in life that you get what you pay for. My question today is why are pack covers so expensive? I also know it is important to keep gear dry, but current prices for pack covers seems high to me. What does everyone else think?

I agree! My solution is to cut an oval, the size of my pack, in a heavy duty garbage bag. I then place cord around the opening and roll the edge of the bag over the cord and place heavy-duty tape over it. You can then place the bag over your pack and tie the string together on the bottom. Cheap, practical, waterproof, and the one I made has lasted me for about three extended trips, while only accruing a few patchable holes. There may even be diagrams somewhere online.

Have you read through the thread "Are Pack Covers Useless?" (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=64323)

Sweet!! Good idea, I think I'll do that! I've been in the market for a pack cover for my new GG Gorilla. On my last outing, I used a black trash bag w/ holes ripped where the shoulder straps come thru. Never had to use it, but it would've worked. Your idea is better! Thanks.:D

You can buy some silnylon and make your own with a sewing machine. As soon as you see how difficult it is to work with that fabric, you'll think that $30 is pretty good deal.

They start at less than $20 at campmore, I picked mine up there. I also use it as a seat on wet ground or a damp log.

This weekend, I myself and my girlfriend didn't mind rain and getting wet as it was a very cooling effect. But the pack covers are sweet to keep all your gear dry and nice to sleep in a dry bag and tent as well as have a extra change of socks that are dry. They work and are a necessity for me no matter what they cost.
