I plan on eating a lotta reconstituted potatoes on the trail... however, I will NOT be using boiling/heated water - only air temp water at best.

Can anyone give me some suggestions on the best brand to use with unheated water from experience, or will they all be about the same?

There's nothing I don't enjoy cold LOL I dunno... it just never bothered me at all when food wasn't warmed!

You just might have to purchase a few brands and try them out. My personal opinion is that most dehydrated types you get in the store will really work best with hot water. And that with cold water they will probably be kinda grainy in texture.

You might have the best results with something freeze dried like that offered by Mountian House.

They all work about the same. Don't get anything with added "bits", like Idahoan "Loaded" flavors--they don't work well cold. Everything else I've tried, from Idahoan to Betty Crocker, work just fine cold. It's also one of the mainstays of my diet. Try to let them soak five or ten minutes.

You can also soak dehydrated refried beans, rolled oats, couscous, and ramen and get decent results. I haven't used a stove for years and my hiking has gotten more fun as a result. Good luck with it.

What garlic08 said. Old scool staple. All kinds of spices and stuff you can add to it to change the flavor from meal to meal. Bacon bits, oregano, whatever. Once you get the proper water/flake mixture figured out it's fast and easy.

Awesome, thx guys.

Ramen is so nutrionally bad... I just hated to bring it along. But I guess I'll consider it since it is pretty calorie dense regardless LOL

The French have a fancy name for it: vichyssoise.
