Going to be heading up late night, probably arriving at midnight Friday Sept 3. Is camping still allowed at The place? We would be out pretty early Sat am. If its not allowed at the Place is there anywhere else to set up late night in Damascus?

I have no idea, but didn't someone post a while back that you can't drive to The Place and stay there? Only for foot and bike travelers.

If no place to camp in Damascus, Lone Wolf put me onto the Backbone Rock National Forrest camp ground 3 miles south of town just in Tennessee. Its mostly car campers but it might fit your needs. It did for me as I traveled across Virginia, through Damascus.

across the street from the MRO. I'm not sure if the hostel itself is still closed. Give Jeff or Steve a call if you want to be extra sure.

theres a bunch of spots just outside of town on the southern part of the AT. Maybe like an 8th of a mile down the trail, on a side trail.

I remember there being a site on the access trail to the AT/Creeper at Creek Junction in a small patch of trees next to the creek. A short walk from the parking area. The parking lot is big enough you can just camp next to your car.

I've driven in, parked at The Place and stayed overnight. Of course it was October and only one other person was there. I think every time I've been through Damascus someone was camping on the lawn. And yes, there is plenty of woods to camp in off the Creeper north of Creek Junction. There are several spots with cleared sites and campfire rings.
