If you're interested in a piece of history then venturing off the AT is the only way to see Herbert Hoovers Summer Retreat. He vacationed here during his time in office while President from 1929-1933.

The blue blaze loop hike is in the central district and is a moderately difficult loop hike that spurs off the AT.
Hazel Mountain is the third highest in the park and is part of this Rapidan Camp Loop hike.

This hike starts at Milam Gap (mp 53) and is about 7 miles round trip from the parking area and only a few miles from Big Meadows.
I'd pick up a SNP Central District map at the Big Meadows Wayside if you were going .

This year is the first in maybe 5 years that we have not spent a lot of time in the Shenandoah. We focused more on backpacking and working northward from GA...so we'll be back to the Park at some point if all goes well. But I did really miss our easy day hikes up there! The Shenandoah has some incredible waterfalls and some really lovely circuit hikes.

Rose River Loop trail is lovely and I'll post a few pics. Rose River is near Big Meadow.

These pics were taken of Rose River Trail in the Fall.

This is a good shot of Old Rag Mtn taken off of Skyline Drive. No trip to the Shenandoah Park would be complete without a day on Old Rag either!

Jones Run is our favorite waterfall hike and it's in the southern end of the park. We did a really nice loop with a bit on the AT also.

Thanks for the input folks. Think we will mostly stick to the AT. Kinda breaks my heart all those beautiful areas are away from the AT. might have to make arrangements to do a side trip on one of our shorter days.

Compromise, AT from Lewis Mtn campground to Skyland for about a 15 mile AT experience. Stretch out to South River picnic area (south) or Pinnacles picnic area (north) for additional AT mileage. You will be in an area with great amenities and proximal to some of the best day hiking in the park at Dark Hollow, Rapidan Camp, and my favorite, Rose River. Shuttle service in that area too.
