Anybody know what's going on at Neel(s) Gap? Was driving through this afternoon at three-ish and saw a bunch of law enforcement/search and rescue vehicles in the parking lot of the outfitters. An ambulance too. We didn't stop. Also took a quick spin through the Byron Reece parking lot and saw several more search and rescue vehicles. What's the poop? Hope nothing too serious. :)

The parking lot to Byron Herbert Reese trailhead has been closed for months. There has been huge traffice barriers blocking the entrance and exit. I wonder if they had to take an ambulace back there.

Resurfacing of the lot was done when we drove through...looks like they cut back on the number of "official" parking slots. They even had parking slots for motorcycles!

I kind of wished we stopped and asked what was going on wrt the emergency vehicles but we didn't want to add to the confusion. :)

Oh yeah...the ambulance we saw was parked in the Mountain Crossings parking lot. The attendants didn't look too busy. Maybe they were there just in case?

Ambulances and EMT's don't have the time or resources to hang out "just in case." They had to have been called out for a reason.

I'll add fuel to the rumor speculation; they probably had been called to pull a motor biker out of the trees.

Sad.

It's REALLY STINKING HOT up here this week.
Record breaking temperatures, at least by local standards.

Hot down there also???

Hurricanes coming.

The thermometer was reading about 90 when I got off work. But it felt a lot cooler then that.

Over 90 up here today, which is really hot for us.
Humid also. 44% RH. Humidex of 101.

Your high is our normal this time of year. Except a lot of times the heat index is around 110-112.

I often wonder about people that just die of natural causes before some historic event, like a natural disaster or before a war breaks out some place. I wonder what I might miss before I go. I usually reach the comclusion that I need to get out and do stuff, rather than waiting for news to happen. The weather is more interesting out there anyway, as much as I do like the weather channel. I think I'll take this netbook out to the backyard now. 6:15am. Still pretty close to 90F. We have no AC so I put some trays of ice in the bedroom for my wife and daughter.

Actually rather nice out here. Low 70s I would say, here on the patio in my boxers. Not very many birds chirping yet. Crow there. Some more chirping and a squak here, and another there. Ther's the crow again farther off now. Just noticed the crickets in the background. Steady and distant, but another one close by clear and intermittent.

Kitchen and bathroom fans are on to pull some of this cool air into the house. All the windows open.

The patio smells of drying flowers. The day lilies are done. The petunias are still doing well, and fragrant. The new herb garden I planted against the house in a terraced raised bed has done great. The deer seem to love the tomatoes and peppers and parsley I put out specially for them, but they have kindly left the blueberries, rosemary, lemon verbenum, german chamomile, english thyme, basil, spearmint and peppermint, and most of the weeds for us.

Another birds awoken.

Maybe Winton was out rescuing another hiker off Blood Mountain ;) There was another hiker that died on the trail this year. He was found in a shelter by a thru-hiker. This took place in Virginia. I think it happened at the Cornelius:-? Shelter I am sure that is not spelled right but you get the idea.
