View Full Version : Why do people hang the water bladders?

I first thought it was because of mice, but heard you only have an issue if you put stuff like gatorade in the bladder. Then recently I figured it was because of condensation. All I know now is that my son and I now have the habit of removing our water bladders from our packs, and hanging them up at camp, almost like a food bag. Is this just a some people do and some people don't thing?

I hang mine because it makes the bladder easier to use for filling cookpots.

Gravity. A wonderful thing.

Yeah, it's so difficult to pour by hand.

I hung my before. Along with the other posters plus I found the air circulating around the bag makes the water cooler..

This is the reason I do it too. Its a lot easier and far less messy to fill a cup from the 'gravity fed ' bite valve than to unscrew the top and trying to pour water out that way.

Evidently you don't use a bladder. Because then you know that pouring water out of a 1/2 full one is a pain 1-handed. Like trying to push a string, it's sides lack the rigidity necessacary for the task. There's your free physics lesson.

I don't hang mine since I want it close by for a drink at night. However, I have rolled over on mine and caused it to leak. Thankfully, not very much did leak out.

Some may be using a gravity filter....

Sunlight helps keep the inside of the bag from getting grody.

I use the tilt method off the edge of the shelter floor. Pretty easy.

The other way is like wrestling a squid.

I sometimes hang mine, still in the pack. As others said, it makes it easier to fill cooking pots.

About the mice though. They do have an appetite for Platypus bite valves. I've had two destroyed when they were left laying on the floor next to me for a middle of the night drink. They are now stored up off the floor. Luckily I was only a day away from NOC the last time, so could get a replacement.

I now carry an extra. I do eventually learn.

I don't hang mine. I seem to manage pouring from my 10 liter bag without much fuss.

since I always sleep in my tent I don't hang. I keep it in the tent with me.

Some people say if you hang water it keeps bugs away. Not me though.
