Florida is still ridiculously too hot for me, man. I've been wanting to go down to Big Cypress but I just can't breath in this humidity. Ocala should be fun. Hopefully October will be cool.

A shakedown for my wife and I in October in Ocala is coming. Can't wait. Suggestions on a route? Probably arrive 3pm hike til dusk, then hike all day, then out the next day at lunch or early even.

My work and my family obligations dictate when I hike. I've been doing lots of day hikes in ONF all summer. This is the first time I've kept on hiking through the summer in Florida and it has been worth it because I'm in better condition for the winter hiking than I've been in 10 years. If any of you ONF hikers get out in Oct. post it here and I'll try to get out there for part of it.

Gonna have another FL WB get-together in Jan when FL camping weather is perfect. Some of the guys suggested on the Suwannee for this year. Only requirements are that we hike in or at least be way off the main highway and have a few tentsites and hammock hanging trees. Peace out.

PS. Dawn, keep us informed. I'm still waiting for that cooler weather.

You can make big miles in Ocala with a light load. I hiked the 70 miles (?) straight thru in 2 full days + 2 half days. But, in warm weather it can be loaded with ticks and biting flies (through clothing!). I wouldn't even bother again if it were not Dec-Jan-Feb. Make sure that you are current on where to get water. I filtered rain water out of the plastic bed liner of a parked pick-up truck. Wasn't bad...

I usually wait 'till after Halloween when most of the giant spiders are gone:eek:.

I'm planning a three day hike and campout out during UF's Homecomming Game. The weekend of October 16th I believe.

Has anyone ever been to Hidden Pond in Juniper Springs? That is where I am planning, depending on how the rain forcast is.

Hidden pond is nice, just make sure we have a nice cold snap in between now and the 16th, at least 60 degrees. That or make sure you're wearing pants with 100% deet repellent. The chiggers are in full force right now, I have the scabs from itching to prove it. :(

It's hard to tell from the pics but it looks like a pretty large bear (well fed). Nice pics!

We had a great hike of about 13 from the local chapters of FT. The hike was fun, no bugs or ticks. Everyone cooled of with a jump in the pond. It was very crowded with about 50 people in the area. Boy scouts from Tampa and a bunch of others. We still had fun! Thanks Rodney for putting it together. Lets do it again. Hikerbob from Crackers Chapter FT.
