Anyone who's ever hiked the Appalachian Trail --- or contemplated doing it --- can see the experience in pastels at a benefit art exhibit Friday through Dec. 21.

The pastels, by Atlanta Journal-Constitution artist Walter Cumming, will be on exhibit at the Alliance Francaise with those of nine other artists who work in oils, pastels, watercolors and photography. Each artist is donating one piece of artwork for an auction to benefit the alliance's cultural and educational programs; other works in the exhibit will be for sale.

Cumming's pastels follow the six-week, 400-mile journey of his son, Alston Cumming, 21, who hiked alone from Mount Rogers, Va., to the Smoky Mountains this fall during a sabbatical from college. His only companions were two huskies, BooBoo and Chinook, who hiked alternate sections of the trail. Alston had help from his father, who met him every couple of weeks with supplies and a rested dog.
