I'm leaving for SNP tomorrow morning. It's been 19 years since I was last there. Is it necessary to hang your food from trees? I usually just sleep w/ my pack in my tent or hang my food bag in the shelters.

There has been an incredible amount of bear activity in the park this year - moreso than I've seen in the 15 years I've been hiking there. Lots of bears in and around the shelters as well. So please use the poles if they have them at the shelter you're at or definitely hang your food.

See the SNP forum for posts/updates.

If you are camping in shelters, most of them have bear poles, while the campgrounds have bear boxes. Otherwise you should hang your food. The bears are stocking up for winter and grabbing all the food they can now. I was near Loft Mountain on Saturday and saw 4 bears, plus heard more in the trees going after acorns.
