View Full Version : YAGQ (Yet Another GPS Question)
I'm seriously looking into getting an updated GPS. I have an Explorist 210 (discontinued a few years ago) that works fine for marking my location and getting back to where I started but doesn't have the ability to import files, USB transfers, memory cards and other neat stuff.
I've about settled on the Delorme PN-40. It seems to be in the sweet spot as far as price / functionality goes but the clincher, from what I can tell, is the Topo North America 8.0 software though I understand that the 9.0 version is out.
Is there a compelling reason to choose the PN-60 over the PN-40?
Is there a better GPS than the PN-40 with similar features and good topo software? I'd love to have software that shows the actual trail....
Heck, does anyone have a GPS meeting these specs they want to sell? :)

I was hiking with a fellow last month who had the PN-40 and upgraded to the PN-60.
He was very pleased with the PN-60's improvement in both speed and battery life.
You could load multiple layers (USGS, satellite) for the whole trail onto the GPS, but I would expect the start-up time and operation would slow down as more data is loaded as it did with the PN-20.

Delorme's Topo 9 software is out, still doesn't route along trails very well except for short sections. Routing via trail from Springer to Katahdin shows 1829.92 miles so it's only about 84% accurate when stringing all the segments together.

I've been satisfied just having all the shelters on a Garmin Foretrex 301 (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=30025&ra=true#specsTab) that I can pull out at night or in the fog, but the CASIO EX-H20G (http://www.casio.com/news/content/1B060E9E-E4B0-4211-80EA-A04348021519/) camera might be a nice GPS replacement. Geotags photos with date/time/lat/long and direction, has a 10x optical zoom, 14.1 mp, 1280x720 30 fps video, onscreen map showing your position, and digital compass.. with no 2-year contract.

Ok, I've decided on the Delorme PN-60 with the biggest selling point being the quality of maps available at delorme.com.
Now to find a good deal.... I've found it for $339 w/ free shipping and no tax - anyone know of a better deal than that?

No, after all that I decided to go with the Garmin Vista Hcx - when I found out the REI coupon would exclude GPS's I figured I go with the Garmin.
Plus I can import routes and waypoints from my Nat Geo software. Shame it won't import the maps though...
