Verizon cell phone, coverage along most of the trail. Restless Legs leaves me voice messages to update his webpage.

Payphones and postcards work great. Payphones are kind of expensive though. I hate the ones that are a dollar for for one minute! a Dollar!

Depends on the parameters of "staying in touch", but if you're not concerned about journaling then I completely agree with couscous' response --- Verizon.

To which I'd add that if you don't have need for an expensive cell phone contract, consider Verizon's "pay as you go" plan, buy a cheap phone and go pre-paid. My wife uses that, and I plan to switch to it next year. For an infrequent cell phone user it's much much cheaper than the least expensive contract.
