There are the two new Granite Gear backpacks coming out. One is designed specifically for women and it’s about time they directed some attention to a large part of the market but what is with the color. The second is similar to the Nimbus Latitude but with the Vapor Trail suspension to save some weight.

I thought the whole point of the Ozone was that it was specifically targeted towards women...? Hiked with 2 different women who thru-hiked with it. But yah, I agree that color is horrendous, not really the nature friendly shade you want in the woods but good for hunting season I guess...

Well ...my Vapor Trail from last year is still going strong but after looking at this new stuff I might consider that Latitude. Thanks for the heads up.
Who the heck do these companies consult with when they choose colors for backpacks anyway !!

The 2nd pack is a 2004 model. I think there are two packs in 2004 from that line. Nimbus Latitude and Stratus Latitude.

According to the Granite Gear Web site the weight of the Latitude in the 2nd lick above is 3 lbs 8 oz and not 2lbs 10 ozs.
I was hoping it was that weight...

Ok first off the GG Nimbus Ozone is not a woman’s specific pack. GG offers woman specific hip belts and shoulder straps for most/all of their line. The new Nimbus Latitude Ki is their first made 100% for women pack.
GG has not updated their site but this pack http://www.granitegear.com/products/backpacks/ultralight/nimbus_latitude/index.shtml (http://www.granitegear.com/products/backpacks/ultralight/nimbus_latitude/index.shtml) is different than this pack http://backcountrygear.com/catalog/packdetail.cfm/GG341 (http://backcountrygear.com/catalog/packdetail.cfm/GG341) . The fist one has the Ozone suspension and the second one has the Vapor Trail suspension. With the Latitude you save 14oz over the Nimbus Latitude but still keep the same 3800ci. I think the picture on backcountrygear.com might be wrong for the Latitude because I believe it is suppose to look like the women’s Ki pack (not in color though I hope).
I will e-mail GG to see what is up.

The 2005 Granite Gear Vapor Trail will have a hydration sleeve inside the pack itself, with a bungee cord, lock, and hoser port. Similar to the 2004 Ozone. Also supposedlly, there will be a top pocket, that can be purchased separately, and can be attached to the VT. There has been some type of changes to the 2 side pockets, what I do not know at this time.

That's good news. I have the 2003 vintage Vapor Trail and used it on my thru-hike. I wrote Granite Gear following my hike and made several suggestions. A hydration sleeve wasn't one of them. I just laid my Platypus down flat and wrapped it in the storm collar and then fastened the two buckles. Never had a problem and liked the fact that my hydration system was readily accessible. However, I did urge them to change the side pockets to stretch mesh instead of the current spandex fabric.
Otherwise that is a solid little pack, as long as you don't overload it. I carried 24 lbs and hardly knew it was on my back.

It seems that if that pack is made just for women, then it sure is a lot heavier. Weight: 3lb. 14oz. If the 2nd link is correct and the weight on it is 2lbs 10 ozs, and it only holds 3800 instead of 3900, then for the difference in weight and cost it does not seem to be much of a good deal. Would love to see what they said.. Look forwarding to what you find out..

Hi Glee. The two packs have different suspensions so that is why one weighs more than the other. The woman’s Ki pack is 3lb 14oz and has the same suspension I believe as the Ozone, which can carry 40lbs and the comparable men’s pack is the http://www.granitegear.com/products/backpacks/ultralight/nimbus_latitude/index.shtml (http://www.granitegear.com/products/backpacks/ultralight/nimbus_latitude/index.shtml) The Ki weighs only 6oz heavier than the pack linked above but has a better compression system and an extra top side zipper access/pocket (not sure what it is for). It is worth the extra 6oz imho. The Latitude 2lb 10oz has the same suspension as the Vapor Trail and can only hold 30lbs so that is why it is lighter than the Ki.
I got my e-mail back from GG today so here is what I found out.
I have noticed over at www.backcountrygear.com (http://www.backcountrygear.com/) that you have some new products out/coming out. I have a few questions about them though.
First off why did you choose to make the women’s Ki pack that color?
This was the color combination that was most popular among a dozen or so we showed to a test panel of women.
Second is the Latitude pack shown here http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/packdetail.cfm/GG341 (http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/packdetail.cfm/GG341) the correct picture shown because I was under the impression that it would look like the womens Ki pack in style/features?
This is the correct picture. The packs are similar in design.
And last is when do you think you will update your website with these new products? Thanks in advance.
Neither of the products you referred to will be available until January of 2005. We will have them on the website when they are actually available to consumers.
Also they have a new top lid accessory for the Virga, Vapor Trail and Ozone.

I'm picking up my Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone 3800 Pack 3 lbs from REI tommorow. It is suppose to hold up to 40lbs. I would like to keep it down to 35, but you know how it goes. I had order it a few weeks ago and was going to cancel the order if the 2 lb 10 oz pack was the same model but lighter. Now I wonder how much the lid weights and when that is coming out. Not a lot of info for what the lid can do either...

I learned some new information concerning the Granite Gear Ultralite series of packs, today. The Virga, VT, Ozone and Latitude, all can accept a separate top lid, that will sell separately for $20. The listed weight of the Virga is now 19 oz., the VT at 1 lb. 14 oz. and the Latitude at 2 lbs. 10 oz. The VT has had the hydration sleeve inside, and the port since sometime aroud Summer. An item my VT does not have. My VT is a pre Summer model, weighing 2 lbs. 2.7 oz.
Damn, that is one ugly colored pack. What were they thinking? Who did they survey, some chicks at the mall? I am seriously wanting one of their packs, but I don't think I could show my face on the trail with a pack that has hot pink highlights...I mean really. Are women who are into long distance light weight backpacking wanting a feminine pack? Not me thank you...
