For those of you who are still in recovery from Thanksgiving over-indulgence, or who, like myself, find themselves significantly larger in years when they don't hike much, here's something to look forward to the next time you're back on the Trail:

Hardee's, my personal favorite junk-food emporia, has announced the launching of the "Monster Thickburger", which clocks in at 1,420 calories.

There's a great picture at www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6498304/

Also more info at www.hardees.com

The Center for the Public Interest, a leftist and perpetually unhappy nutrition watchdog group, has referred to Hardee's new creation as "food porn."

Sound OK to me!

Unfortunately, a quick check on the Hardee's website and Map Quest reveals that the nearest Hardee's to Hanover is in Myerstown, PA, something like 418 miles away. Looks like I'll have to wait a month as there's one near Duncannon in a town called Dauphin; perhaps I'll have slimmed down enough by then to treat myself.

If anyone who actually lives in Hardee's country (Wolf maybe?) wants to sample one these babies out and write a review, please feel free.

There's a Hardee's 12 miles from Damascus. I've lost 37 lbs. in the past 3 months. I don't know if I'm ready to ****** up my physique by eating one of those blobs of fat and cholesterol. But I may have to eat one for the team and give a review. :D

If you walk there and back you could probably eat two.

Hey, that's only 132 calories per ounce. Sounds like trial food to me! I shall try one tomorrow and report back.

You conservatives are a bunch of pu$$ies. You pack heat but you won't eat a burger?! Gimme a break Jenny Craig

If there was one anywhere near Burlington VT, I'd try one. Guess I'll go back to Taco Bell

What is this, a commercial for Hardy's. I swear some of you (not Wolf) complained about off topic subjects on this forum. I'm very glad to see you've loosened up. Speaking about loosening up, the Deadly Fat Burger mentioned is fantastic. The only drawback is you have to immediately climb three mountains with a full pack to get rid of it.

Losing weight was one of the reasons I started hiking. (I'm 150 pounds lighter than I was 3 years ago)

But you know that's one of the things I like about backpacking... while burning that many calories I can eat whatever I want.

A-Train, you make me sick...you have one of those physiques where you couldn't get fat if you wanted to... even if you did nothing and ate 6 of those Monster Thick Burgers every day. You owe everybody a big apology...especially anyone over 40. :)

Speaking of running out of topics...I challenge anyone to come up with a genuine hiking question that has never been addressed on White Blaze...we are at the point of saturation.

Ok,
Your hiking one night and you look up to see aliens hovering above. They beam you up and do whatever it is aliens do with us. You wake up the next day at a point further up the trail than where they beamed you up. Now, assuming they flew over the trail(which means technically, you passed all the whiteblazes on the way over) what would you call this? Are you still a thru hiker( since you passed ALL the white blazes), is this slack packing, UFO blazing???

Damn, I just saw it...... a GENUINE hiking question, sorry

While wiling away the days on the trail I used to dream about a weight loss business. I would offer an "all you can eat diet" of anything you may desire. With just one minor caveat. You would have to carry everything first for 15 miles up and down hills in a 45-pound backpack.

Something I've wondered for a while... it may be true that the calories can be burned, but don't things like cholesterol and msg have to still be considered? I would think these things are still harmful in large quantities, even if one is burning all the calories. And with some of the calorie rich and preserved foods we eat, it seems like it's almost worse than when not hiking. ?

The "Monster Thickburger" — two 1/3-pound slabs of Angus beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese and mayonnaise on a buttered sesame seed bun — sells alone for $5.49, $7.09 with med fries and a soda (2340 calories total and approx 120 grams of fat)

Well if you're going to go out of your way for food porn while on this trail, I'd be more inclined to go for the monster burgers Flashhand pointed out in another thread. Only two-thirds pound of beef is for the girlymen;)

I personally don't have a problem with cholesterol, sodium levels, etc so that isn't something I currently worry about. My "everyday" diet is low calorie, fat < 30%, not-too-many carbs. This won't work when backpacking. While on the trail I switch to high calorie, high carb.

And when I get off the trail and I'm craving fastfood, I wouldn't mind grabbing a Hardees Thickburger. Once in a blue moon won't hurt. "Everything in moderation".

WHEN THE Hardees people decided to increase their market share they hired every pulpwooder and bread route salesman and ups (Rural router) driver in the southeast to name their favorite cross roads and wide spot in the contiguous 13 Confederate states and sold franchises. Most actually got built. A large majority of them are actually still in operation Quality and sanitation practises vary accordingly..

caveat emptor!

Hardee's was started in NC and the restaurants are still everywhere here. Like hacksaw said, quality and sanitation do vary, as witnessed by the health department here in Chatham county, NC, closing the Pittsboro Hardee's for a week to clean it up.

I could say that Hardees used to be a consistently good Southern fast food restaurant until they got bought by a northern (yankee) company in the early 90s, but I won't. :D

The funny thing is not that a big, nasty, colon-rotting burger exists in America, because they have for a very long time (including much bigger, globulous patties of ground cow leftovers). The funny thing is how some American minds are so controlled by marketing that they let advertising concepts occupy the precious time and space of their daily cognitive function.

Damn, I guess that includes me. All this complaining is making me hungry.

..and I thought McDonald's sausage biscuits were a calorie dense trail treat !

Hardee's TR:

Monster Burger, Nature's greatest trail food?

Nope, don't think so. Like any new Oliver Stone film, it doesn't live up to the hype. Yes, it's a big, tasty, mass o' protein. But, I was let down. I skipped the fries and soft drink, thinking that would be too much. Now I find myself craving a fried pie. The burgers at chain restaurants like Benigan's are bigger and better.

I'll say this: there's always a good chance of finding a Hardee's near you in the south and after four days on the trail, one of these would be welcome. With fries.

A warning about Hardee's in PA. The one in Gettysburg has a ham and egg biscuit that is made with thin sliced deli ham, a shock if you're expecting southern country ham. I don't know what tricks they might try with a Monster-perhaps they butter the bun instead of using mayonnaise?

I've seen this place mentioned here on WB before. Someone actually ate it all in under 3 hrs.

Found this today: 19 yr old woman eats 11 lbs of burger/fixins.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat/2005-01-17-hamburger-record_x.htm

Here's the website of the place she ate it at:

http://www.dennysbeerbarrelpub.com/

Google it for more info. Got a stomach ache just reading.
