There's a campsite a couple miles north of Wayah Bald...the water source is a creek.

By Wayah Road, I assume you are referring to the state maintained paved road? There is a small (4-6 car?) parking area and picnic area there, but no "official" camping spots. Can't remember if there was any signs prohibiting overnight camping. I seem to remember a small spring/stream that crossed the trail as you are comming north towards this spot. Probably unreliable at this time of year. :)

I try not to use water sources near a road.
Any oil, antifreeze, or other fluids that leak out of vehicles winds up getting washed into those springs and creeks. While I don't know for sure, I doubt a filter would remove that kind of stuff from your water.

I'm sure. Most won't. Road runoff is NOT a good source for drinking water.
