So, My wife and I are planning to head to the Smokies soon. We are driving into Gatlinburg the first day and then heading to Cosby Campgrounds the next morning. I will get to do a dayhike to Chimney Tops the day we drive in and then she wants to go to some stores afterwards, so the next day we will drive to the Campgrounds, from which we will hike out for a nice loop. So, question 1:

How long (miles / time frame) of a drive is it from Gatlinburg to Cosby camgrounds?

I am thinking head across on 321 from Gatlinburg towards Cosby and then hoping there is a sign or something pointing me in the direction of the campgrounds. So, is this road open? Is it busy, take a while to travel?

So, after a few days and we finish our loop we will probably drive to a hotel somewhere for the night and get cleaned up. Then the next morning we are driving to the parking lot near Max Patch and hiking up for the day and that night then simply hiking back out the next day.

So, next question(s):

Should we drive back towards Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge area to get a room and food (and possibly a resupply for something good to eat for the easy hike in to MP), or is there something heading more towards Max Patch area? Of course this will also depend on the drive from Cosby to Gatlinburg area... Leading me to...

How is the drive from Cosby to Max Patch? Time & distance?

Thanks.

use mapquest of microsoft streets and trips. you'd be surprised at the roads they include. for my part I'd minimize my time in Gatlinburg. after Max Patch, why not head on over to Hot Springs and treat your wife to a B&B.

I think the drive to/from G'burg to Cosby CG is no more than an hour.
Why not get some groceries as you leave G'burg and camp at Cosby, it's a beautiful CG and much less crowded than Elkmont or Cade's Cove?
If not, there's afew places to grab a burger on 321 between G'burg and Cosby and also a neat apple orchard (towards Newport) and a good mexican place in Cosby (The Front Porch). There's also some rental cabins in the area for accomadations, never stayed in the hotels there.
