Let's just say I like hiking south of Harper's Ferry a lot more than north of Harper's Ferry.

What do these infamous Pennsylvania rocks look like? Here in Santa Barbara, rocks are better than dirt because dirt is like ball bearings.

Oh yes, I might get tired of those after a while. How long do you hike on rocks like that? Weeks? Days? Here and there?

There's at least 100 miles of rocks of all kinds, mainly in the northern half of the state.

It really is something to see. When I looked down Lehigh Gap I thought, "How am I going to get down that...."

I'll say this about PA though... the rocks are more than compensated for by how nice the people there are..

Most are after Duncannon ; ( approx. Midpoint of the Trail . )
A ?? sixty - year - old , female College Teacher , did the stretch
from there to the Delaware Water Gap in from June 6th to June 17th.
11 days . Week and a half . However , the Whites are LARGE rocks ,
and some say Kathadin looks like the sky rained rocks ! David

I generally hate rocks, but there are some areas that really make me wonder. It's all how the rocks are laid out compared to the surrounding landscape. The two places that come to mind are Devil's Racecourse ~10 miles south of Harpers Ferry and the area of Blackrock Mtn in the SD of SNP.

I think the scenery in Pa. makes the rocks less tolerable than other places. I rarely hear anyone complain about the rocks in N.H. or Maine.

I didn't find the PA rocks that bad, but then again I was dayhiking my PA sections. In flip flops.

I've found worse rocks here in NC, though granted not on the AT. Check out the Art Loeb Trail in NC for a more horrifying rocky experience.

Allow me to complain. The 13.5 miles NOBO down Mt Washington sucked.

Allow me to complain. The 13.5 miles NOBO down Mt Washington sucked.

That's where I broke one of my trusty hiking poles... Slipped right between 2 rocks covering a 2' void, I fell and ripped my pants and cut my knee and the side of my right shoe blew out.

That area reminded me of a lunar landscape.
