Has anyone ever backpacked with a pack basket? My Golite Breeze is basically the cloth version of one, but how cool would it be to have one made of maple, et al?

Yes, but on short distances while walking a trap line. It is more convienient for large bulky things like 330 conibears.

I grew up with baskets like that around the place. My folk were high country farmers (Italian Alps)
In Nepal the "kitchen" porters still use them. Great for relatively light but bulky stuff.
Not very good for dense heavy gear. In the old days for that there was something that looked like an external frame . Loads up to 70 lbs were carried with them.
This is a German version of it :

I have a small one that I have used for day hikes. I get a lot of comments on it when I take it out because a lot of people like it. It's very roomy - great for taking food to outdoor events and it's comfortable to use because it allows for air circulation.

I also have a very large antique one I bought a few years ago. It would do to pack in enough gear for a week's hike. . . it's just so large that if I packed it I couldn't carry it. A guy could, though.
