I have amended my plans and am arriving October 21 in Amicola to hike the Southern Loop. I have two questions. I need to leave my motorcycle and riding gear somewhere for the month I am hiking. Any ideas where this could be done? Also, I need to buy/download maps of the route. Any recommendations? Thanks for the help. Hope to see some of you out there.

Loop???? What "loop" are you referring to?

As to map - the AT Conservancy would have the map, or if you have an REI (or other outfitter store) in your area they might have one. I use the small "AT Guide" which is a book that is available for each state (or sometimes more than one state) of the trail, and it comes with a map. The book describes each section of the trail, gives you road access instructions, shelter and water locations, etc.

I second the opinion that you should contact Hiker Hostel. You should also take their phone # with you when you hike - provided you take a cell phone - it could come in handy. They can answer many questions about the GA section of the trail.

I like the Springer Mountain trail map from Nat Geo #777.

There is the BMT/DRT/AT loop which is about 57 miles not counting the part to Springer. Then there is the BMT/AT southern loop which is 360 miles. Based on your plan of a month hiking I assume that is the one you are talking about.

Rock, when you talk of the BMT/AT loop are you assuming a northern terminus at Shuckstack or Davenport?

. . . There is the BMT/DRT/AT loop which is about 57 miles not counting the part to Springer. . .Always thought that was the Georgia Loop. Did I miss something?

Assuming you are talking about the 360-mile BMT/AT southern loop, be sure to get Sgt Rock's data book: http://bmtguide.com/

We thru-hiked the BMT/AT loop (both northern and southern parts) earlier this year using his book, which we found superb!

Our BMT/AT Loop journal can be found here, if you need more info: http://trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=10946

Generally when I hear someone talk about the "Southern Loop" I assume they are thinking the Shuckstack loop, and Davenport is the loop, northern loop or the figure 8. The BMT has a rocker for doing the entire ~520 mile loop.

I plan to hike the entire BMT (not the AT loop) in a few months - do I get a cool patch? :)

You can - I think you have to buy it, I never got one but I also never reported my hike:
