Looking to get my brother a tarptent for his wedding present. He has expressed interest in a light weight 2 person tent and I was wondering if the Scarpa would be a better tent for him than the rainbow.
His hiking/climbing is almost exclusively Western (Rockies and Sierra's). He hasn't done too much mountaineering, but has expressed interest in getting into mountaineering and ice climbing.
I figured that since he spends a fair amount of time at high elevation that the Scarpa might be the best choice, and I'd probably opt for the mesh inner since he's most active in the summer, and this tent will probably also get used when he does more relaxed hikes with his wife.
Am I wrong to think that the Scarpa will be superior, or is the rainbow still the way to go for a 3+ season tarptent.

Did you mean Scarp? Call Tarptent and talk to Henry, he'll answer all your questions. No point in buying from a cottage manufacturer if you don't call and talk to the owner/designer. But yes, the Scarp is made for a lot nastier weather. And people use the DR everywhere with no problems.

Scarp for sure. Much better at the conditions you describe. Plus you can get two inners - one mesh for warm climates and one solid for blowing snow.
And as Joe said, give Henry a call.

Went with the Scarp, I liked the ability to convert it to a double walled four season tent if he wants to. Seems like its a very versatile design, kinda wished that it was around when I was tent shopping...
Yes , go for the Scarp 2.
As pointed out above , it is a convertible shelter. Use it with the mesh inner and you can even do this :

(This is the Scarp 1, the 2 is the same but larger)
Or you can use the fabric inner and get the extra poles and it will work in winter too.
Sorry that Henry is not around but he likes to hike too.

Ah! Brilliant.
I wasn't too happy when I had my double rainbow on a super windy ridge. It was too well ventilated. I was amazed that I didnt break a pole. My friends sierra design was totaled that night, so it could have been much worse.
get the additional hardware to make it free standing. That has come in handy from time to time.

The end can also be lower than that if you dig a bit under the pole tip...

I have the 2009 but I have made some modifications since then its more weather same weight, and larger interior volume.
