* What type of hike in regards to difficulty ?

* Are you looking to use shuttle services ?

* ONE 2 day hike or a two different hikes ?

> The closest part of the AT to D.C. is No. Virginia/ Harpers Ferry, WV. into Maryland. * Hike to Weaverton Cliffs for a grand view of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers at the town of Harpers Ferry.

> If you're looking for day hikes near D.C. , there are state parks that offer really interesting hiking and you can be home by dinner.
Great Falls State Park in Virginia is one that comes to mind.

> A longer drive down I66 to Rt.340 south will get you to Front Royal , VA. and the northern entrance into Shenandoah Nat'l Park . A $15 (7 day user pass) is needed.

>> hope this helps .

Day hikes around DC might include Great Falls on the MD. side of the Potomac. The Billy Goat trail takes you out from the C&O canal tow path to the river using a loop with some cut offs for variable distance. It includes a fun but short rock scramble. If you are a bicycle person you can rent one at Union station. Put the bike on the metro Red line and go out to Bethesda and catch the Capitol Crescent trail, all down hill to the C&O tow path. Go west to Great Falls, MD or go east for a short scenic ride back to Georgetown along a level gravel hiker/biker trail.
