View Full Version : Base layer - a question for the guys

Fellas -

I'm happy with my winter weight base layer with one exception: I'm sick and tired of exposing all of my nether regions at 10 or 15 degrees F just to take a leak. Does anyone sell a good lightweight synthetic base layer with a fly?

My cold weather lower base layer came from Sgt. Rock's gear list....army surplus pants liner. Costs about $10.00, fits loosely and comfortably under you pants...and the fly area has no zipper or buttons. I reconfirmed this functionality last weekend on the SHT.

So, if I understand you right, you are saying you are OK exposing Mr Happy to the elements but not your Dearie Air when answering the "midnight call?"

OK try Hot Chillys or Patagonia Capilene bottoms. They both have a fly.

Good grief!!!! You guys have nothing to expose compared to what we have to expose - and talk about inconvenient?! . . . you don't have to take your pack off every time you go, either. ; - )

Take my pack off? Shoot, with a fly I wouldn't even stop walking! :p:p

If you like the gear you got, just customize it. It shouldn't take too much sewing experience to add a fly. And since you're already looking to buy some new ones, you don't have to worry about messing them up.

Even better, you could just stick in a catheter and run it down your leg inside your pants and then have a little "anchor" on your boots so that it trickles out behind you as you walk. No muss...no fuss. As far as #2, I don't know...haven't thought that far ahead. I'm not sure they make catheters that big. I'll check.

Well, some of us have more to expose than others!

Get out the Terramar base layers on STP. I think some of those have a fly.

My Terramar wool bottoms have a fly as do my Duofold polyester bottoms.

Picked these up today from Sears, with a $10 off coupon for $11 each:

Very, very comfortable with a fold-over fly. They are stretchy and fit snug.

I have a pair of [cue music] "Rocky" brand from Walmart that have a fly. They're a pretty nice mid weight synthetic layer at reasonable price.

Brand names don't matter much.
Just so long as it keeps your Bullwinkle warm. ;)

Not sure what kind of cold you're hiking in, but I've always done fine with just some long johns under my pants. Picked up a pair at Dicks for $16. Kept me perfectly warm and they've got a nice fly in them. :D

i just cut the front weenie seem on my underarmour leggings and stiched a velcro fly in there. and to the women.. if we have to hear ad nauseum about "what am i gonna do with my hair??" you can let us whine a bit about exposing our little "lekis" to the elements.

as far as base layers, I recommend going to a target store and checking out the options from Champion. I havent tried the cold gear but the duo dry shirts, socks, etc, work just as well as the more pricey gear out there. during a sale the shirts were a mind boggling 2 dollars and 48 cents each. tried one and put it through extensive testing ( a 3 mile jog followed by 2 games of pick up basketball) and went back and got 6 more.

+1 I just loaded up on some of the duo dry gear, great stuff for the money.
