I wonder how easy it may be to take my cat, Archibaldo on the trail the full 2173.452 miles?

Has anyone ever completed a thru with a cat? dogs are the easy option, it would seem.

I vaguely recall there was a dude who took his (Manx) cat on the trail, so it's doable. Just like with dogs there will be areas where you will not be permitted to take it.

In 1990 a hiker by the name Geek hiked the trail with his cat. There were several time he carried his cat in his pack while other times his cat hiked the trail with him. It was great at keeping the mice away.

I should think it would be difficult to keep up with the cat, too. . . they don't tend to "come when called" all the time. Plus, it may not be leash trained, so it could be dangerous in some areas for the cat. Dogs do respond to commands more than cats. Another thing is that you will have to carry the food. . . dogs can take their own packs. Have you considered that it would be difficult for the cat in perhaps weight loss? (A dog could stand to have a bit more weight loss I would think than a cat, in comparison.) Another thing to consider is that a dog could perhaps stand it's ground when confronted by another animal, whereas a cat might not be able to. (Attack by a racoon? Other similar wild animal?)

I wonder what is the smallest dog anyone has ever hiked with...:-?

I saw a couple of day hikers in the Whites carrying a pair of pomeranians, but they obviously weren't doing more than a few miles. Something like a rat terrier might be useful against the mice, but like you mentioned, wild animals could pose a risk.

In '06 there was a father-daughter pair hiking the Trail. When I ran into them in Maine, the girl had a cat riding on her pack.

I also met a NOBO in Grayson Highlands who had found and adopted a tiny kitten a few days earlier.

I don't know how either trip turned out.

I'm waiting for one of our fellow lady hikers to start an equally titillating thread. Perhaps one of them is interested in taking a Rooster on a hike. Mostly as a food supplement measure, I'm sure.

Being from South Carolina, I'm fully licensed to use the "C" word (GameCocks).

The smallest dog I know of is a beagle that was with one of the early hikers mentioned in the Rodale books. He made it the whole way. One of the biggest I saw on my second hike was a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. He had to be carried over the bad rocky bits in NY and NH. Since he weighed around 100 lbs, that wasn't easy. OTOH, I've seen several big labs who did the trail with little trouble - but they liked to climb.

One problem with a cat is there are so many dogs on the trail now. When Geek and Ziggy hiked, there were fewer hikers and thus fewer dogs. I can see things getting pretty chaotic if you tried to bring a cat into a shelter with dogs or v.v.

There was a fellow hiking the trail with an iguana this year, carrying it on a very large pack with a sort of canvas flap over it to give the iguana something to sink its claws into. I ran into him at the Mayor's place in Unionville, got a picture with the iguana (http://postholer.com/journal/viewJournal.php?sid=95c4ebe9839982c9748e500c9d5bc1 3e&entry_id=15299) to prove it.

I don't imagine a cat is necessarily much heavier than this iguana, so if you had a fairly sedentary feline (and aren't so many of them just that?), I suppose it could work. Or it could provide unlooked-for diversion as you wandered the woods calling for your cat after something spooked it, only to eventually find some fur, collar, and bones or whatever the coyote left. While I realize this is unsolicited, my personal opinion is that your housecat would be a whole lot happier at home.

You might also encounter difficulties getting your cat from la ciudad de Mexico (D.F.) into the U.S. ... no verdad?!? Or at least I would have guessed there would be some quarantine period or something along that line.

Beat Florida!

Anyway, more on topic, while I think it would be cool to have mine around, the whole HYOH thing would be out the window and soon become the cat's hike, which no doubt would include a trip up a tree - for both of us.

That would be cool bringing a cat but what if he runs away or gets lost? He'll keep you up in shelters running around killing mice all night too. In the book AWOL on the Appalachian Trail he mentions a guy who thru hiked with his cat. I've also met a hobo who brings his cat with him on freight trains.

Would that make a difference on the trail?:-?

There was a guy this year that completed a hike with a kitten. I hiked around him here and there and he had no problems with the kitten running away. It stayed nearby him all the time. It rode on his pack most of the time but would hike the trail a bit each day. So, it's possible.

See post #22 :).
Ziggy not only hiked the AT (well, Jim carried him almost all the way), but he canoed a long stretch of the Mississippi River, and even caught his own fish, (or so I have read), and he was the best mouse trap on the trail that year.

This summer near little rock pond in VT I met a girl hiking northbound. She was carrying a kitten on the top of her pack. She had found it in Virginia and was taking it to her parent's house in Maine. The cat appeared happy and in good health.

My best friend and I pulled a 27 miler to set us up to walk into Damascus early the next morning on a Spring Break '09 section. When we got to the shelter that night we found Degoba (about 12 beers deep) and his Dachshund (rAT dog). He said the dog was a great hiking dog but couldnt get over my friends 39 pound boston terrier. Maybe it was the beer talking. Either way, Trail dogs come in all shapes and sizes, so long as they are trained well, imho.

Luckily, he hadnt drank them all and had three left.

WOW!
I haven't been on WB since June ...logged on and see a cat topic.
Ziggy and I hiked the AT in 1990. He hiked the first 30 miles but then found a home on top of my pack. He did the entire trail except the Smokies and Baxter. On the trail he ate dry cat food that I carried...in town he had a can of moist cat food everyday and at the shelters he ate hundreds if not thousands of mice in those 6 months. He grew up camping, thought that he was a dog, liked to swim, came when I called him and would sit on command. Oh yeah...he only weighed 3# at Springer but 14# at Baxter.
If you insist on taking your cat, call me and I will give you as much advice as I can but my primary advice is to leave him home...he will be safer and you will still have a happy kitty when you get home....Ziggy already had 2000 miles and 6 months of canoe camping before we hit the trail...he was not your normal cat.
