Does anyone know where I can get a Blaze Orange Beanie in 100 wt fleece? I am looking for something similar to the Mountain Hardwear Micro Dome (0.85oz) but in Blaze Orange. It seems like such a simple item but I can't seem to find one anywhere, they all seem to be made out of heavier fleece or acrylic.

Or instead of being so picky/specific and having to blow $30, you could just get $5 acrylic from the convenience store.

You can always dye a white one, but have you checked out a local sporting goods store? they have every kind of hunter orange beanie typically, I've seen fleece, cotton, acryilc, wool.

The problem I have with the heavier fleece or acrylic ones is that they are too hot to hike in. The black 100 wt fleece beanie I have is just right for cold weather hiking.

Yeah, I have a Microdome and love it for hiking -- but I haven't seen one in blaze orange. Seems like a good idea for them to make one.

I make fleece hats and I have not seen a good "blaze orange" in the lighter fleece material.
We can usually get the 200 weight in a good, bright color but, everytime I've seen anything orange in the 100 weight, it seems to be a dull orange color.
That could be the problem.
Good luck in your quest.

Just seems like a waste of $30 to me. But its his $, his call. If I was faced w/ spending $30 or making due, I'd make due.

I sent an email to smartwool regarding their "cuffed beanie" think it's model 12-596? a 100% merino wool beanie, about as thin as they come. It looks like they are going to seriously consider making it available in hunter orange also. I have a black one that I absolutely love, best 18$ I have ever spent on clothing.

We shall see if they start coming out with them in a few months. A rep from their marketing and production department called me to thank me for the feedback today.

Update: I just checked the most obvious place to find a Mountain Hardwear Micro Dome style hat in blaze orange, Mountain Hardwear themselves and new for Fall of 2010 they have a blaze-ish orange color that I purchased. Hopefully it will help keep me from getting shot!

PA has more hunters per capita than any other state. thanksgiving week is one of the busiest times of the year, when lots of hunters are out in full force. every year i hike during this week.

my wife has crocheted me a blaze orange hat and sewn me a blaze orange vest. the hat is customized to be loosely crocheted so it is not too hot to hike in. i also have a blaze orange pack cover and blaze orange gloves that i wear.

all of this stuff cost me less than $10. you can easily "make due" or "do" :D

Montana begs to differ: http://fwp.mt.gov/education/hunter

"Big Sky country boasts more hunters per capita than any other state in the nation."

ESPN disagrees with everyone: http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/hunting/news/story?id=4428705

"With the exception of Alaska, no state has more resident hunters per capita than Idaho."

Edited to add that I can't find where anyone is getting their numbers from.

Edited again because I found a 2006 US FWS survey, even though I know no one else cares about this.

Percentage of hunters by state:
AK 45%
MT 40%
MN 39%
WY 37%
ND 35%

PA is quite far down the list at 18%

What kind of fabric did you use for the pack cover and gloves? I'd like to make a super light, breathable and cheap blaze orange jacket just to wear over my regular hiking clothes during hunting season.

I did a little search. I, personally, wear a nylon blaze baseball cap styled hunting hat during hunting season. I might wear a very light lycra balaclava under it in extreme cold.

the pack cover is a heavy duty denim type material. it weighs a little more, but i kept tearing up the cheaper fabric and nylon ones - they only lasted 1-2 trips. the gloves are cheap fleece. she didnt make those - i think i paid $3 for them at the hardware store - a spontaneous purchase while standing in the check out line purchasing a new shovel.

and the vest i have is cheap fleece too. i actually wore it as a "flintstone" costume 2 or 3 halloweens ago. then i just took the spots off and cut it to length (instead of a dress). thats right - it was like a dress

You can purchase very light, very breathable polyester vests at any hunting store. Usually they're less than $15.00. You can tie them to your pack, too.

I have found that 90% of hunters who see you, will see you from the front and not from the back.
So, I like to tie bright orange, pink, red or any flourescent color RIBBONS on the shoulder strap of my pack when in deer season. (or any hunting season)
The hat also is important but I think too much emphasis is put on the pack cover which usually is the last thing hunters see.
Just my 2 cents.
