View Full Version : Best/Worst Hikers Candy?

Spokes

I'm staring a bowl of left over Halloween candy and wondering what the best and worst hikers candy is?

Personally, I love to pop a Jolly Rancher (peach flavor) right before doing a strenuous climb and never cared much for Rolo's.

Maybe we should exempt Snicker bars from the gitgo?

Any kind of jolly rancher or hard candy like such. Starburst used to have a hard candy that I liked to take camping.

And obviously snickers.

I wish beef jerky counted as candy. I could eat that stuff all day everyday.

I remember last summer when my Snickers were melting I switched over to tootsie rolls.

Of course I did spread out a melted Snickers bar on a tortilla one day and rolled it up like a sushi roll -- Yum!

Payday Bar

Yes! My long-time favorite candy bar.

I eat very little candy when I'm out in the world (still haven't touched the extra Halloween candy we have lying around), but on the trail is a whole different matter. Dark chocolate covered almonds, plain dark chocolate, Snickers, Heath Bars, its all good.

springerfever
11-04-2010, 19:30
Another good chocolate fix is Bakers semi-sweet chocolate found in the baking section of grocery stores. Comes in nice little bricks whick are scored to break easily. Great taste and a good jolt of pure chocolate for energy. In the winter you have to let it warm up in your mouth, but in the summer it will stay solid without melting.

I like the Fast Break - kind of a mashup of Reese's cups and Snickers - and it's also made within sight of the Trail in Stuarts Draft near Waynesboro, VA (along with the Take5). Scroll down to antepenultimate entry in this list (http://www.thehersheycompany.com/about/manufacturing.asp)

I used to like the Pay Day PRO for high summer but it's discontinued, leaving Pay Day as the choice for those conditions.

We saw recently that Backpacker magazine suggested Whoppers, I've never tried those on the trail myself, never thought of it before actually.

Milky Way is a lot better in really cold weather. I personally prefer a sack of fig newtons or cookies. They are about the same price, but you can get 1.5 lbs of fig newtons at dollar general for less than 6 snickers bars. I never bought candy bars again after I discovered this.

Peanut or peanut butter M&Ms and sour Jelly Bellys, esp. in my trail mix. I like Paydays instead of Snickers, as they don't melt.

I'm old enough to remember Triple Decker chocolate bars: dark on the bottom, milk in the middle and white on the top (or was it the other way around?? ). I loved to peel the layers and eat them one at a time. I also remember WHOLE almonds on the tops of the Mars bars.

How would you make a Cherry Blossom hiking stable? Freeze it and have it on the first day??

I also fear they're not still being made - web search doesn't bring up current info (Lowneys was taken over by Hershey Canada then Hershey closed their Canadian facilities and it's not currently listed on Hershey Canada web site as a product).

"Worst" hiking candy? That would have to be butter mints. Many years ago when I was still a young greenhorn i had heard that candy would give me energy when hiking. I carried about 1.5 pounds of butter mints with me and handed them out to my friends as we began a long uphill on a very hot day. Everybody was spitting them out and begging for water within minutes. Sam's Club has the larger Snickers w/almonds. What sucks (kinda) is that there are 24 of them in a box and I rarely hike more that 10 days a time so I end up eating a lot of them on the drive back home.

NECCO makes a couple different candies that are similar to a butterfinger minus the chocolate. They make a Chick O Stick (has tiny coconut flakes on the outside) and also a peanut butter log which has a white candy coating with the brown stripes. Pearson's nut roll--a substantial candy bar if you like peanuts

ProBar--if you want to include bars

also sharkies; like gummy bears but with electrolytes

Atomic fireballs
gummi coke bottles (hate them at home, but like them on the trail)
dark chocolate
vanilla tootsie rolls
fruit by the foot

Although I've become really impressed with the Snickers Almond bar recently, the truth is that the best candy bar in the woods is the same as the best one at home: Heath Bars, end of story.

Worst - that often stale Halloween candy corn
2nd worst - cotton candy
3rd worst - Skittles
Best - a premium bar of Swiss, German, or Belgian chocolate. PLEASE, let's not compare Hersheys crap, which is just chocolate flavored sugar, to ANY type of high quality chocolate coming from those countries!

Is it bad that half the reason I'm getting excited for this trip is cos I'll be able to stuff my face with all this food? Jolly Ranchers... :D

British candy sucks! :p

British food sucks!

No, you can't - not without paying the consequences. BIG misconception amongst the American hiking crowd. Just because you expend a great amt of calories on a hike doesn't mean it entitles you to stuff your face with junk food without it having negative affects on you. Sugar, especially those cheap refined sugars, are prolly not what you want to be stuffing your face with on hikes.

A handful of chocolate covered espresso beans and a cup of water will knock out a headache pretty fast. Used this recipes for years since I try to avoid pain meds. They also hold up real well in the heat. Love em but they are sometimes hard to find.

Jelly Belly jelly beans, simply the best. They can be hard or chewy your choice.

man- it's like we were separated at birth HB. THE BEST CANDY EVER- Ol man Willy's Candyland trail mix- Two parts Jelly Belly mixture of your choice, one part Skittles (I prefer the new Darkside flavors- they are made from sith lords), one part Runts. You get all the flavors, something gooey, something crunchy.

Two new favorites
1) mounds, the perfect combination of dark chocolate and coconut.
2) Brookside. Dark chocolate with fruit. Fairly heat resistant and the nectar of the gods.

but I'm a bit biased.

You're the one that got me started on Cow Tails. I've hooked a few others since then. They were one candy that held up well in the heat. Most chocolate stuff just turned to a mess.

Candy covered almonds (Jordan) did well too.

Twizzlers, black, of course. Good N Plenties. Black Crows. Black Jelly Bellies.

The best part is that you aren't often asked to share. One time, though, I was in a group of five and we all liked licorice. No wonder we got along well.

Was thinking that Peeps might be a good choice.

- 2 year shelf life

- eat them alone or throw a couple in your morning tea/coffee/hot chocolate

- spell out SOS when lost ( bright colors can be seen for miles...)

- can find them on sale after the big holidays

At home I buy em at Easter. I slice open the packages. I then "hide" them above the kitchen cabinets. I eat them on the 4th of July.

It's a formula that works.

Another made near the A.T. choice (Stuarts Draft near Waynesboro, VA, as I think earlier observed in the thread the factory can be seen from the A.T.). It's been a long time since I've thought about Bit-O-Honey.

What I really hope for is that Whitey's will open in each Trail town. (I earned my 0 in Davenport.)

Ok. So just about every candy has been covered so far. Here's a couple I don't think anyone's mentioned:

Chupa Chups - Mmm delicious creamy fruit flavored lollipops that blow the tar off a Dum Dum and last waaaay longer. Not always easy to find but so worth it!
Hot Tomales - Just like Mike and Ikes they don't melt unless you're hands are sweaty climbing that big hill your climbing and you hold them in your hand for less than .5 second. That's ok, though. Licking the red deliciousness off your hands also includes fiber from that tree you grabbed to steady yourself and from the earth you put your hand on when you fell. Main benefit: fresher breath! Maybe for 5 minutes but, hey - when you see another hiker coming, just pop a couple in and chew slowly. They'll be greeted with your lovely mixture of cinnamon, sugar and whatever else your Mountain House dinner contained last night.

One of the fun things about my AT hike was finding random candies I hadn't seen for decades in little, rural shops--Black Crows, horehound cough drops... I wasn't very far into the hike when I instructed home base to remove all the King-Sized Snickers and other stuff I'd bought at Costco ahead of time from my mail drops so I could forage in the country stores.

As an ultrarunner also, I recommend the Clif Blocks or similar for warm weather. Soft and gelatinous, but don't use them in cold weather or they will remove your dental work if you have any crowns, etc. Other than that, I'm partial to Pearson's Nut Roll.
