3-5 inches??? That ain't snow - That's a heavy frost where I come from!!! :D
I wish i was up there. Its getting down to a bitter 52 degrees in South Florida tonight. Brrrrrrrrrr.
I just drove through Sam's Gap and it's getting a dusting already (2:00 PM)... Down here in the valley it's 44*.
Calling for up to 6" above 3000' and little to know accumulation here in Erwin.

Good idea - Lazarus is coming down from CT and we're going to hike Sam's Gap back to Erwin this weekend - I'll take my camera.

had snow in damascus today. 5 inches on whitetop. no biggie. normal for this time of year
I am looking out over a light dusting (.25")of snow here in Grassy Gap, 16 trail miles north of Springer.
Yesterday it was snowing on the trail here for the first time this season. I was out on my daily walk and on my return from Blackwell Creek I ran into a through hiker wearing shorts. He, like me had no idea it would be snowing when we started earlier in the morning.

In Michigan,
3" - ignore it.
5" - MIGHT break out the snow blower if I'm bored and the weather is to stay cold. Otherwise, ignore it.
In Wilmington, NC, where I lived before moving to Erwin, 5" of snow would mean there would be no bread in the grocery stores.
