I'm wondering if anyone's ever been hiking in Mexico....

I've done bits and pieces here but not too much and only day hikes.

The Potosina Huasteca region is beautiful with so many rivers and waterfalls and I've done some hiking around the Mexico City region... Chiapas is beautiful.

Way before I ever hiked I road horses out to Parícutin and tried to hike up the side. I made it halfway before I couldn't get any further. Partly out of shape, partly altitude sickness.

I've always wanted to go back and ace it.

I haven't gone camping down there in nearly 20 years. I'd love to go back, but I don't know nearly enough to visit places that are beautiful, has clean water and is less likely to get me killed by the cartels.

If you got any good links about hiking in Mexico that you could share, I'd greatly appreciate it. It's okay if those sites are in spanish.

are you going to hike southwards across the grande?! not likely anywhere else

check out la huasteca potosina

This would be a fine place to do a bit of hiking, though no doubt there'd be much road and track hiking

la huasteca potosina has some of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life or even in the movies....

I want to stay away from grow ops and it would be nice to be near friendly towns so I could resupply. Out here marijuana farms are in the mountains. Do they do that there too? It can be bad enough running into a pot farm on this side of the border. Other than that, it's pretty much the same as here except I'm horrible at doing research on non-english websites. The pictures you posted are beautiful.

I noticed a lot of bald patches of trees on the mountains, my girlfriend and I commented to the taxi driver and he said some were weed patches and other stuff... It seemed fine all over though....

You can hike to the top of PoPo.

You can hike to the top of PoPo.

If it were not for a thru hiker's slide show put on in Cuernavaca in 1979 I would never have hiked the AT.

Randy (?) also attempted Popo but had to abandon the summit to help a fellow climber slide down when his rental crampons failed.

I am still looking for Randy (AKA Rodrigo) to thank him for the show and hiking advise-- perhaps he will appear on line one day.

Popo would be really cool if one were up to it.

The only camping I did in Mexico was on beaches. I slept with a machete by my side for protection one night, but found it stollen when I awoke. I do recall being grateful to come upon individual selling cola at the top of some minor day hiking summits, but cant recall where.

I need to get back one day!
