Appalachian Trail Documentary
“Walking with Freedom”
Unofficially Screens at Sundance Film Festival

Although not an official selection of the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, filmmaker Michael Daniel has announced an independent screening of his new documentary, “Walking with Freedom” during the Park City, Utah annual film event.

Daniel hopes the film’s screening and events planned around it will raise awareness on the need to protect, conserve and manage the remaining wild-lands of the Appalachian Mountain Range.

“Walking With Freedom” will be showcased January 24th at The Upper Deck, 570 Main Street, Park City, Utah. The film covers the ‘ups and downs’ as well as the hardships and joys of Daniel’s 2,173-mile hike from Georgia to Maine over a six-month period and what it feels like to be a part of the eclectic, hiking subculture as well as highlighting some of the backpackers who take this lengthy walk. “This film isn’t just for hikers. It’s for anyone that loves freedom and the outdoors,” Daniel says. From encounters with the wildlife (including some wild hikers) that roam the Appalachians to the wild flowers and the beauty of its highest peaks on the East Coast, this film is an emotional, scenic journey that will move any viewer. Scripted to an amazing soundtrack of original music - some tracks created specifically for the project – viewers are immersed in the true experience of virtually hiking the famed trail. Music Supervisor and Executive Producer, David Burrows sought first-rate music for the film and its 18-song accompanying soundtrack – “the Appalachian Trail Mix”. Independent artists responded with literally hundreds of submissions from all over the world bringing together a diverse mix of Blues, Folk, Country and Alternative Rock tunes.

Events supporting the film’s screening include a Rock Wall where climbers and non-climbers alike can have a taste of the mountain life. Prizes, hiking gear, food and information on the Appalachian Trail will be available near The Upper Deck from Saturday, January 22nd through Monday the 24th.

The screening, which is open to the public, will begin at 10:00 p.m. followed by a question/answer session with the filmmakers. Complimentary ale and appetizers will be provided as well as an acoustical performance by one of the featured artists in the film - Scott McCurry. Guests may also register for over $5,000 in backpacking related prizes supplied by JANSPORT, LEKI, BACKPACKER MAGAZINE, and CLIFBAR.

Tickets for the event are $10.00 each at the door. A portion of all proceeds will go to the Appalachian Trail Conference, which supports, manages and protects the historic trail.
