OK, I know that there are alot of you that are near the AT here in NE TN (and SW VA and NW NC) and I'm sure you make the occassional dayhike to somewhere on the trail. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a dayhike a little bit more rewarding, look no further...

TN Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club (http://tehcc.org/) currently maintains over 135 miles of the AT between Spivey Gap, NC and Damascus, VA. There are approx 40 sections averaging in length between 3-4 miles and some include a shelter. All of the sections are maintained by someone just like YOU.

Typically, you'll hike your section several times a year (whenever you want to) with the following tasks in mind:

- clearing blowdowns
- cleaning water bars
- clearing annual growth (briars, weeds, etc)
- blazing as required
- removing trash
- noting areas that might require Club attention
- etc.

Interested?

If you are unsure of maintaining an entire section, you might consider being a Shelter Monitor instead. With 16 shelters there is always something that needs to be done just at a shelter.

Interested? If so, you can reply to this thread, send me a PM (mountain squid) or contact our Maintenance Coordinator ([email protected]).

Now, there are 14 states that the AT travels through. Maybe you are too far away to volunteer in TN, don't worry. I'm sure we're not the only club in need of Volunteers. Contact your nearest Club or ATC (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.mqLTIYOwGlF/b.4850645/k.FA36/Volunteer.htm) for more info and be prepared to Lend A Hand!

See you on the trail,
mt squid

PS. If you would like some OJT before assuming this responsibility, just let me know.
