I'm curious if anyone has an information regarding the Northern Black Water Terminus where it connects to the Alabama trail. I do a winter hike with a buddy and have done blackwater many times but always started or stopped at hurricane lake. The idea of hiking north and into Alabama sounded like a good idea.. I just can't find information on the Alabama trail .. we plan to take our girlfriends and don't want to find ourselves road walking for a day.
Thank you in advance.

The trail in Alabama is the Alabama Pinhoti Trail, and it's southern terminus is in central Alabama. I remember reading that they're working to one day connect the two. There's also a trail called the Conecuh Trail that's in Conecuh National Forest, just north of the state line. I can't really find much info about it, but it might be possible to extend your hike into Alabama using that trail.

There's a few maps there. It looks like roughly 20 miles between the two. The FT Data Book mentions something about meeting at a junction with the Alabama Trail.. Not sure about that part.

There is not a woods trail in Alabama where the FT enters Alabama. The Alabama trail has a sign at the intersection of dirt roads and the sighn makes you think you will walk into the weeds/woods--wrong.. The trail is on the dirt road and the blazes are far apart, at least they were last year. You can walk roads to Conecuh which has some OK trails and then roads to the Pinhoti or just use roads from the FT to the Pinhoti just east of Sylacauga where the Pinhoti starts. There is some work being done to make a woods trail from the FT to Conecuh but I do not think all the permiting and approvals have been acquired. You can get more update info at http://www.alatrails.com/forum/

Are you looking at the Wiregrass trail? I just spoke to the FT chapter rep 3 weeks ago about it. He said it was in good shape, but reinforced that it ENDS at the FL-AL line. There is a portion of the Alabama trail in the Conecuh National forest. The Pinhoti is 150ish miles north. I will be up there next month.

I hiked the Jackson Red Groundtrail as a youth (30+ years ago) and did go up near Krul Lake to recon it about 2 months. I heard it is in fair condition. The Juniper trail is the southern connector, which runs from Blackwater State Park north about 8ish miles to meet with the Jackson Trail, which runs to Krul Lake and connects with the Wiregrass Trail (to the state line).

Or for more info as the Florida Trail (connector) see here:

Hope that helps...
