I have only seen reviews.

Is Michael Bane's "Trail Safe" book worthwhile reading for AT hikers?

My two cents- Sounds like all hype to me.

Most local police departments have free literature on crime prevention and self-defense. Some even put on free clinics. Google "Crime Prevention Tips" and you'll get a bunch of hits. Most of this information is common sense.

I'm on the fence about stuff like this and believe most of time all that happens is a perpetuation of the paranoia (wonder why Michael Bane is sighting a rifle?).
Sure everyone needs to be aware of their surroundings, even more so in an urban environment.

I think your money would be better spent buying an extra water filter or set of AquaMira than on personal defense literature. You're more likely to get sick in the back country than assaulted.

I saw it in the new ATC catalog so I figured it might have some special merit or acclaim.

Here is what the ATC says about it:

"An unprecedented guide to averting threatening human behavior in the outdoors, a joint effort of ATC and the Wilderness Press. A briskly paced look at personal safety, the real risks, and how to use fear to your greater enjoyment of what's supposed to be wild out there."

Cool, gotta love the internet.

I can't seem to get into the book. Guess I'm just not that paranoid.

LMAO, after scanning the "Handgun Use in the Outdoors" section.

BTW, what's the saying "When all you got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail"?
