Yes, I know.
You don't NEED one to hike the AT.
I'm actually considering my very first GPS unit.
I know this unit probably has features I may never need, but I hate buying something only to find out later that you should have gotten model XXX because it does this, this, and this that your current toy doesn't.
I'm not really looking into being talked out of buying a GPS....
I was just wondering if anyone here has this unit and if so, are you happy with it?

GPSMAP 62st, not GPA
I have the 60 CSx which is the unit the 62 replaced and it has been great so far. I just recently got it when it was marked down for the 62 to debut. I have been able to get my maps for free from gpsfiledepot which was a big plus for me. I didn't want to r couldn't afford to spend extra on the maps after paying 200 for the 60 cx. The newer Garmins have a few extras like subscription to Google earth (which I don't want to pay extra for) and the ability to hold the unit at an angle (not flat like the 60 needs) and still be able to work the compass. These were things I could live without so I got the 60.

If I understand what I've read, the 62st has all the maps already so you do not have to buy more....... they just charge you up front however in the cost of the unit.... they obviously are not free.

The main differences being the preinstalled maps of the 62st and the added altimeter, 3-axis compass, high speed USB, wireless transfer and micro SD slot on the “s” models.

I like the altimeter, usb, and wireless transfer features.
The "st" has 100k maps. You can get more detailed 24k maps for free. See if they cover your area. If they do, then you can probably save some money on your 62. As far as I can see, the main advantage to the "st" is that it offers shaded maps on the device. I don't see anything about it offering 3d to take advantage of DEM data that is only currently available from Garmin. Actually, one other other advantage may be that built-in maps load faster than downloaded maps, but this is merely wishful thinking.

I have a Garmin eTrex (http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-eTrex-Vista-HCx-High-Sensitivity/dp/B000PDR1LS/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1290498687&sr=8-8) which is fine for most AT travel. Even when I have it turned on I mostly just use it as a pedometer and a way to get my bearings while holding up a local PATC map. The 62st may be expensive overkill.
