Seen one today that isn't familiar to me.

In central NC (piedmont)... about 12" long, 3/4 diameter, black, smooth, single piece, tapered ends, hair mixed in. Out in an open field.

Anybody have a guess?

Sounds like mine! Could be a coyote.

Constipated shelter mouse. It was sun bathing when he noticed a raptor heading his way need I say more.

Likely canine of some sort, probably coyote. The black is from coagulated blood, plus the hair, both from critters it ate. Usually not that long (12"), but the hair can bind it all together into a single "log".

What was the locale in NC?

Does sound like coyote.

Here's a basic scat identification guide (http://www.northwoodsguides.com/animal_scat_notes.htm#top). No pictures but pretty good descriptions.

Know the species by the feces!

A bit hard to get an idea of the size except based on the grass in the background, but it looks like bear scat. Looks like maybe some berries were in the diet? Helps to have someone local (like especially a hunter or fish and game person) who knows exactly where you were and what various animals were foraging on. Lots of different poop can look the same. Just my $#!tty guess on it being bear anyway. :D

It looks a heck of a lot like second turd in the first picture. But I'd rather not consider the option of a mountain lion in the neighborhood. :)

That is awful interesting in that page about the scrapes. There is a mowed path across the pasture, there is a pile of grass and stuff piled up...about ten feet from where somebody has dumped a deer carcass. (not a wild kill, it was field dressed). My dog HAS to pee on that pile every time we walk.

We do have lots of coyotes here. I spotlighted the deer carcass the other night, six of them on it. There's just one lower leg part there now.

Yes, it's interesting. Coyote populations (http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/6149488/) in North Carolina are on the the rise. They're now found in all 100 counties across the state.

Hi 4 eye buzzard,
It was a large pile of s***t on the SHT. There are black bears there and we had to hang food. I have a bear print from another location on the same trail that a local Id from a pic but I forgot to show him the poop.We thought bear or moose on this one. Nothing smaller. The bear poop I saw on the AT was really full of seeds and much more of a wet plop.

Deer scat is more like pellets in the fall and winter, and usually like your photo when they are getting lots of wetter green plants in the spring and summer.

The OP probably saw coyote scat.

Between Mantracker on TV and having to identify crap in people's basements for Pest Control , I never thought I would be reading this thread, too funny.
