I'm planning a 3 1/4 day hike from Chester Gap to Harpers Ferry. I've looked at the shelters and mileage in the AT Data Book, but am not sure about where I should stay each night, especially the first night. All the reviews say avoid Dick's Dome Shelter, but the next shelter is Rod Hollow, which would make the 1st day a 23 mile hike. Anyone have a suggestion on how I should plan this hike? I'd like to average about 16 miles a day, with the 1/4 day being about 6 miles. I'm going off the assumption that the weather cooperates each day.

Dont worry about Dick's Dome. It's fine. Great water source and the dome was renovated. Enjoy the hike.

The dome is round on the inside so it limits the number of hikers to 4 (I believe). I hammocked there this past summer and the water is right in front of the shelter. It is small but a nice place to rest.
