Dawsonville, GA 30534 will give you the general idea but keep in mind it will be colder on the mountain than the listed temps due to elevation.

FWIW-365 days a year, there is weather on Springer. Just some days are better than others.:D

The "sophiaknows" website is great - accurate every time I've had occasion to check. And the neat thing is that is lists all the shelter temps, so you really do know what you're going to be looking at.

There is no snow today. It was actually quite mild at 3000' with temps reaching 45. But that is going to rapidly change as we are expecting several inches of snow starting tonight and ending Monday followed by severe cold with lows in the single digits. Next week will be about as big of a winter hiking challenge as we get here in Georgia. Good Luck.

You can click anywhere on a map, and it'll give you the forecast for that particular spot on the trail.

From Hiker Hostel late night on 12-12-10:

Tried to get to Springer to pick up 5 Southbounders this evening, but all routes were a no go due to ice. With a hard freeze tonight & tomorrow night, it will be several days before the roads are driveable...and no, 4WD won't help!

With a hard freeze tonight & tomorrow night, it will be several days before the roads are driveable...and no, 4WD won't help! That is correct. I am sitting here in Atlanta, but I just got off the phone with my neighbor at Grassy Gap (3000') and he tells me the trail is covered with solid ice, topped with a couple of inches of very dry snow, and severe winds making conditions very hazardous. He said he went out and came back within minutes due to the conditions. I cannot speak for Springer 18 miles down the trail or the rest of the trail in Georgia but I have no reason to believe it is any better up or down the trail. Could be near 0 degrees tonight. We do not expect to see above freezing temps at trail elevation until Thursday. Wednesday's high will be near freezing with what looks like a real good chance of more snow or freezing rain. Unless you are looking for real adventure, and have hiked in similar conditions I recommend staying off the trail until Thursday or Friday. I know the local SAR would appreciate it.
