Read Entire nation gets a 'ringside seat' to total lunar eclipse (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/space/2010-12-20-Eclipse20_ST_N.htm) and get your Pink Floyd ready.

From beginning to end, the eclipse will last about three hours and twenty-eight minutes. For observers on the east coast of the U.S. the eclipse lasts from 1:33am EST through 5:01 a.m. EST. Viewers on the west coast will be able to tune in a bit earlier. For them the eclipse begins at 10:33 p.m. PST on December 20 and lasts until 2:01am PST on Dec. 21. Totality, the time when Earth's shadow completely covers the moon, will last a lengthy 72 minutes.

It's only the second lunar eclipse to be on the winter solstice since year 0. The next one will be Dec. 21st, 209?. The last one was in the 1600's.

It's a good thing I liked that Benjamin Button movie...and that I was fortunate enough to not be born ugly, arguably.

I thought we had until 2012 (12/12/12) before everything blows up, or whatever it is that's supposed to happen. Oh well, I still have today to max out my credit cards, spend all my savings (all $29.35 of it), and go on a hike!

I understand at some point, when the cogs of the cosmos fall into exact alignment, the door to the universe next to us will open... then what?

We'll hike into it, of course!

Good grief! You mean even the moon has to go through a 12-step program?

In case anyone is as confused as I tend to be, the eclipse is early tomorrow morning, not 35 plus hours from now. The 21st starts tonight at midnight. The moon's eclipse a few hours thereafter.

You're right, I should just go for it. My neighbor up on the mountain has a trampoline - sounds like a plan!

Anyone else going to get out there to see it from your bag?

Well, I had planned to, but seems I'd have to tent camp. Weather forecast is for totally overcast with showers all night. boo hoo!

All of the above, and more. Good excuse to party. Also, they say the moon will turn blood red, a sure sign of the end of the world. And it's about frikkin time, after all the previous false alarms.

so what does nature do on a nite like this?

It becomes overcast with snow showers so we can't see it. :( From the looks of the weather map, there aren't too many places which will be able to see it.

I remember both of them. Pretty nice. I hope tomorrow morning's will be as good. I'm setting the alarm as soon as I log off.

Very nice. Thanks for posting that. It was completely overcast here in Charlotte. There was a red glow in the sky, but neither moon nor stars were visible through the clouds.

Off to the next hike!

I woke up just as the total eclipse was to start, but saw nothing but a darkened sky, "no moon at all" as the old jazz tune said. Not even a red glow. The cloud cover was thick and 100 percent over mid coastal Maine. Earlier the brightness of the full moon had brightened things a bit through the clouds and the light snow. When I headed to bed around 11 p.m. two inches of snow lay on my driveway. When I awoke this morning, it had all disappeared. No white Christmas seems likely this year. And we had bought a 6-year-old grandson his first pair of snowshoes.

Nice pictures, Karl. I saw exactly the same. I've had trouble describing the color, you captured it perfectly. The light band appeared on the right, not the top, from North Fla.

We had lake effect snow showers as it came in. A few of us were talking about hiking to high local ground - Heublein Tower on Talcott Mountain until we saw the clouds. Stayed in town and watched it with a friend through the thin clouds. Hazy view, but better than nothing. It did gradually disappear! Was to tired to stay up and watch it come back, though.

I was in the Boulder foothills last night from 11pm until 1:30 am the clouds vanished long enough to make a cold , clear and wonderful night. Wish I had a 400mm lens for the camera!

In any case, here's a near video of the eclipse:
