Sears has it for $49.99

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_SPM1128330901P?sid=IDx20101019x00001 a&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=SPM1128330901

I'd pass on it and shop around for a better name brand tent. Check Sierra Trading, REI outlet, Campmor, etc for a sale. I picked up a Marmot 3 person for the same price earlier this year.

TY I thought the weight was appropriate for a four season ent after reading the sears ad it doesn't say anything about the tent being a four season. I have been looking for a four season and expected to sacrifice a little in the weight department. Glad I didn't get conned on that one

If you buy it on EBay, you have about a 90% chance of being conned. Ebay is home of the most North Face knockoffs in the world. Probably every other brand too.

Inre eBay,
I don't think you'll see many counterfeit / knock off tents, packs, or even sleeping bags - the amount of cutting, sewing, etc. is just too intensive given the relatively small size of the market for these goods to justify it. Counterfeiting a tent or sleeping bag involves a LOT of work for the sale of relatively few items. Where you find the knock-offs is mostly in logo branded clothing as it's a crossover market within general fashion with much larger volume. Fleece jackets, nylon shells, ski and board wear, hats, shirts, etc. are the biggest in this area. Just as in the golf industry, they counterfeit the biggest selling items that are in high demand. The counterfeiters are already experienced and geared up to make these items, sometimes right across the street from the factory the real item is made in.

eBay can be risky, but like anywhere else, most of the people and businesses on it are honest and legit. Everyone gets a black eye from the crooks though.

I was thinking the same... Counterfeiting a tent would be like making phony pennies....

Geez man, you going for heavyweight of the year? 5 pound pack, 6 pound tent, 1+ pound bivy, probably 3-4 pounds for your goretex parka and pants, then there's the camelback and metal water bottle plus who knows what other bricks you're carrying.

I totally understand trying to save money, but at least choose wisely. You don't need a 4 season tent, and you really don't want it if your goal is to hike any considerable distance on the AT. It is way too heavy and small. Given your budget, I suggest looking at the 3 man shelter from Appy Trails. A ground cloth and that military bivy will keep you dry inside. Wait, I can't find that thread about the bivy...were you going to carry a military bivy?

You can reduce a lot of weight with very little money. Stuff like a stove made out of a soda can, a super inexpensive and lightweight poncho, a rain skirt instead of rain pants and much more. Put the wallet down and take more time learning about your options.

Carry the weight if you want. HYOH and all. I carried similar types of gear on my training hikes earlier this year. I'm sure my pack easily exceeded 70 pounds because when I took out a LOT of weight it still weighed 50 pounds. That load puts a lot of extra wear on your feet and joints that could cause them to fail before you reach your destination.

Get an Alps Mountaineering Zephyr 2.0 if you want a 2-person tent. Bet you can find one around $100 if you search around online. If you only need a one-person, check out the Zephyr 1.0, probably can find one for around $75
