Hi folks, I'm looking to do some day hikes in January. Anybody know of good sections between NY and Southern VA that aren't covered in snow? I've done all of MD, lots of PA, most of NVA from Front Royal to Harpers Ferry, and bits and pieces in the BRP and SNP.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks a bunch,
Dan P.

I think at this point, your best bet is to finish your "missing pieces" in SNP and along the BRP as long as you contact the Park Service beforehand to ascertain whether the roads are open.

If you're looking for nearby hikes out of the AT corridor, you can also try Catoctin Mountain National Park (http://www.nps.gov/cato/index.htm) and the Great North Mountain area of George Washington National Forest on the VA/WV border where you can park at Wolf Gap (http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gDfxMDT8MwRydLA1cj72 BTJw8jAwjQL8h2VAQAzHJMsQ!!/?ss=110808&navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=FSE_003705&navid=110130000000000&pnavid=110000000000000&position=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&recid=23580&actid=29&ttype=recarea&pname=George%2520Washington%2520%2520&%2520Jefferson%2520National%2520Forests%2520-%2520Wolf%2520Gap%2520Recreation%2520Area) and hike trails on either side of the road.

Thanks for the tips. Green Ridge looks nice, never been there, but have been out that way, so will have to check it out. Catoctin is a regular camping haunt for my family, so definitely agree with that recommendation, especially the cunningham falls.

But, yeah, i'm focusing on the AT. Hoping to meet a mileage quota this year, so want to start early. Any more AT locations appreciated.

If you are wanting to stay on the AT Micheaux in PA is nice. Have day hiked there several times and always love it but there are some rocky parts :)
