Thanks!

McKenzie says thanks also, 4 years old, figure its about time the little hiker girl got her own subscription! She started hiking 6 months ago - she is doing great, this will help her enjoy it more.

She has no problem with the photos :). Needs a little help with the words but reading BackPacker while she falls asleep beats reading "the red duck goes quack" or some other kids book (and for that - a BIG thank you from me!) !!! :sun

I like backpacker. It has some great articles. My only complaint is it puts a lot more focus on hikes out west and I get jealous :-)

Backpacker magazine is an excellent magazine. Has a lot of useful information.

I occasionally look through one at a magazine stand. Way too many advertisements. Also, I'm skeptical about BP magazines objectivity when rating gear made by those who buy ad space.

Go to a big Barnes and Noble or Borders and check out the sports section. There are several good mags about hiking and related pursuits. I like Backpacker and Climbing, and of course Outside.

I understand your point, but Backpacker does say on there website that there reviews are done independent of the Manufacturer and that company logos may be near or on the same page as the review of there product, but that the review took place in the field well before. Of course im sure backpacker is getting these products for free to review from the companies. So you never know what the situation is.

I have found there reviews to be helpful. But as with everything you cant trust just one source because it could just be marketing. Often before I buy gear I will check out Backpackinglight forums, the guys there are often brutal and critical of the performance of there gear.

Cheers and happy holidays.

to get backpacker magazine you can visit the site backpacker.com they are usually available in the grocery store magazine isle. i just picked up the november issue (it was a double issue) and it had some pretty cool info like gear reviews and tips for winter weather hiking. best one out there:cool:
