It is a beautiful white-frosted morning here in Southwest Virginia, the stuff we thought was fantasy only as we grew up in the border country of South Texas. No mesquite, no cactus, no sticker burrs--just beautiful snow.
Now, gimme a Christmas gift--melt. There is a trail to enjoy. Yeah. Meantime, give each and every W-Blazer the joy and blessings of this day.--Kinnickinic
Merry Christmas to one and all...

Midcoast Maine has three inches of new snow, and the fringe of marsh that borders the field I call a lawn is ice covered. We awoke this morning (late) to see what I think was a young bald eagle perched in an oak tree we've been nurturing for nearly a half century. Eagles nest on an island a quarter mile into the bay.
I tend to think of this as the Yule season. But whatever, have a nice one. We did attend Christmas eve services at the ancient church we can see a mile to the south, across the marsh and shallow Drummore Bay. I usually only attend for Xmas eve and at Easter sunrise. My wife goes regularly and rings bells in the bell choir.
I especially had to go this year because the wife of the couple that had given our land trust a public access easement to the seven acres of open field that they own had asked that I be there. Plus her husband who is the church's new organist, is a member and treasurer of the land trusts board of directors. He replaced our long time organist who resigned after getting in a fight at a local Irish bar. The church "deacon" this month is the guy who runs the one-man saw mill where the land trust buys the timbers for bog bridging.
I had been a super regular church goer through the age of 11 or 12 so I knew all the songs. The church was packed for the first time in my experience. It's the "liberal" congregation in town. The conservatives attend an equally crowded old church a few miles down the Phippsburg peninsula.
Our church was founded around 1760 and the current building was built in 1802. It's gone through several rebirths in the years since. The pastor formerly worked as a laborer in the shipyard in Bath until he quit to attend a nondenominational divinity school. He preached as interim pastor preached in Phippsburg while going to school, and was hired fulltime after ordination. The conservatives minister is a retired army sergeant who still favors crew cuts. I know him well because several times he's driven me to the emergency room as the volunteer ambulance driver.
Our minister has shoulder length hair and a black beard.
I had walked up the long uphill driveway to the church from the overflow parking lot with my walking stick, and was greeted by the pastor as "the only person I know that carries a walking stick all the time." I told him when going to church I liked to call it my staff.
Though I mostly call myself an agnostic, my eyes still water a bit when the lights are turned out for the last song and we sing Silent Night, Holy Night by candle light.
