Which shelters would u suggest staying at and which would u avoid on this stretch. Considering leaving Dec 31st, 2010.

amicalola NOBO to franklin

i suggest staying in none of them. lotsa great camping in that stretch

approach trail to franklin, at this time of year no crowds at any shelter and water should be fine

pitch the whole way. shelters way to cold and windy now. sleep on soft snow and wake warm and toasty.

i stayed in the black gap shelter a couple of weeks ago.... nice shelter. I will be leaving from springer parking lot nobo on Dec 31. Panning on staying at Gooch mtn shelter the first night, woods hole shelter the second and depart from neels gap on the third

You'll be warmer in a tent.

Don't count on Springer 12/31; depending on weather it may be full unless you get there early.

Blue Mtn gets a lot of wind because of the way it is situated. Nice views, though.

Tenting is much, much warmer.
