Is it legal?

I do not see why it would be illegal unless posted at a specific trailhead which I have never seen. Of course etiquette would dictate that on a shared trail skiers should be aware of hikers and snowshoers when moving quickly downhill. I find it very difficult to ski on most of the AT even with backcountry or telemark skis due to fact that much of the trail is narrow and steep, though there are certainly sections that are reasonable for touring and there is plenty of great terrain in the AT corridor for woods skiing when there is enough coverage. It seems like you guys down south have allot more snow than we do in northern New England right now. Enjoy!

I`ve used snowshoes on the trail,so I don`t see that cross country skiing would be much different. Should be ok.

Er, wait a minute! :D

I have never, ever read that skiing on the AT is illegal, but that's not to say that it isn't restricted in some places.

I was thinking of doing a week long backcountry trip or something down the trail. I'll read about the specific areas on the ATC or any park services site. I have a feeling if I actually call, I'll get a resounding no. If it's not on the rules and regulations on the interwebz, then that's good enough for me. Thanks for the help!

Skiing and/or snowshoes generally won't work on the AT as it goes thru Georgia, NC, TN and Virginia. Why? Well, it's not called the Green Tunnel for nothing. In deep enough snow to warrant snowshoes the Tunnel will have collapsed due to rhodo and other brush leaning so heavily over the trail that you'll have to belly crawl thru it. With a full pack it's slow going and near impossible. Can it be done? Sure, but you'll be lucky to make a mile in 2-3 hours.

The parts of the AT I'm familiar with in the north would be difficult. There would be relatively short sections that would be doable, probably more in CT and Mass than VT or NH. The Catamount trail parallels the Long Trail in VT and I think goes along the AT at times. http://www.catamounttrail.org/

Since you live in Boone, what about the New River trail, or better the Creeper Trail from Whitetop. Would'nt they be skiable?

As long as you give right away to hikers, I don't see why not.

I tried Rondenee skiing in NM on the CDT.
It turned out to be very dangerous as it is not a ski slope and got steep and very narrow and I had to bail so i wouldn't hit a blowdown and broke my bindings.

There is no law against it (that i know of,) and I do it (cross country) near the AT and sometimes on it here in PA.
But, generally it will really slow you down unless you're above treeline.

This will be my first backcountry trip longer than an overnighter if I do it. I will probably try from Roan Mountain to Damascus (and some of the Creeper Trail) if I go so I have plenty of bail-out options. Need to wait for some more snow. If this winter is anything like the last it won't be long. :) They say it won't be as bad as the last but it seems like they say that every year...
