Attention Hikers: We Need Your Help!

The Appalachian Trail Conference is evaluating its seasonal programs (Trail crews and ridgerunners) as part of the implementation of its November 2003 strategic reorganization plan. Now, hikers and other users of the Appalachian Trail—along with program alumni and agency partners contacted by mail—are being asked to join an anonymous survey of those programs' effects on individuals' experiences on the A.T. The survey will take just a few minutes to complete, but your responses will become an integral part of determining the future direction of this conservation work of the Conference.

Take the survey today!

I just sent it in. I added that Gizmo deserved a raise for the fine work he does on Springer.

You mean his trail maintenance or his bitching about how young thru-hikers are ruining the culture of the trail??

And mentioned that the AMC needs its stranglehold over part of the AT removed. Plus, I suggested signs with these rules be posted outside shelters:

No dogs
No smoking
No cell phone usage
No loud noise between 10:00 PM - 5:00 AM

I've previously posted that I think that religious activities around the AT should ideally be individual (silent reading/meditating), or done in trail towns if the group/noisy type is desired.

I also wish I'd have said those signs should have a sentence on them about LNT, say, something like this:

"If you bring it, and don't eat it, excrete it, or burn it to ashes, take it with you when you leave."

All I meant by those suggestions for signs at shelters are to help ensure that hikers (and the quality of their hiking experience) aren't F'ed with by other hikers, and hikers don't F with the Trail. What's so wrong with putting a few of the more egregious common violations of Trail ettiquette out where even the most blind-to-common-courtesy people on the Trail can see them and be reminded of them? It's kind of like signs at public pools saying not to bring anything made of glass near, IMO.
