Thru-hikers Companion should be on the shelves mid-January. If you give the ATC a call you could probably pre-order and be among the 1st to receive it.

Thru Hikers companion is out.

What's that supposed to mean? Out as in "out on the selves"? Since I'm pretty sure it's not, you must mean "out of production" That would be the Thru-hikers Handbook, a different guide than the Thru-hikers Companion.

Most hikers who pre-ordered The A.T. Guide (northbound) should receive them next week, but the first batch of books are nearly gone. I'll get more the week of Jan. 17. The good news is that the pre-order discount will continue till then.

The southbound edition will be ready in February.

There is no longer a Thru-Hiker's Handbook, since it's been merged into The A.T. Guide. There are still some 2010 THH available from Trailplace.com.

Last years guide (which is sold out) was 2010. This years guide will be 2011. ;)

Since Bob McGaw's (old Wingfoot) Thru-hikers Handbook merged with AWOL's AT Guide, the only two "thru-hiker" type guides are the latter and the ALDHA/ATC's Thru-hikers Companion, both available soon.

There's also the the state guidebooks (https://www.atctrailstore.org/catalog/iteminfo.cfm?itemid=209&compid=1) and the Databook (https://www.atctrailstore.org/catalog/iteminfo.cfm?itemid=677&compid=1) (both available now).

Is there any big enough difference between the Handbook, Companion, and the Guide to say that one is better than the others? I'm guessing it depends on the situation. I'm planning to hike SOBO this year; I hadn't heard of the Guide before, but a southbound edition sounds like just the thing I'd need.

I have used the Companion for the past few years while doing long section hikes and I really liked the format. This year, I saw a few thru's out with Appalachian pages and I think I'm going to give that a try this year. Just placed my order, check out the website for more info http://www.theatguide.com/index.html .

I pre-ordered my AT Guide and I haven't gotten mine yet. Says it won't be shipping until the week of the 17th. I ordered it straight from AWOL's site. The shipping date is right on his site.

Just deciding if I NEED to get any of the other guidebooks. I think I'll need to.

I know I'll be ok. I'm in no hurry to get the book. My job prevents me from doing too much hiking right now. So no rush.

I don't guess the italics on the word need showed up too well. I was referring to the fact I don't need any others, but I'll get them out of want.
