I was just looking at Backpacker's list of the highest points in each state. Being from SC, I was reading about Sassafras Mountain when I saw this line:

"walking the Foothills Trail ... You'll pass ... the highest waterfall drop in the East"

Hmmm. But the one right down the road from me here in Dawson County bills itself as the highest waterfall in the east. A quick google search however and I discovered that:

Upper Whitewater Falls is the highest in the east: http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/Whitewaterfalls.pdf

No, Fall Creek Falls in the Smokies is the "highest waterfall east of the Rockies": http://www.smokymountainnews.com/issues/06_03/06_25_03/mtn_voices.html

These guys say Crabtree Falls is the "highest waterfall east of the Mississippi": http://www.aria-database.com/cgibin/falls.pl?59

Toccoa Falls is also the "highest waterfall east of the Mississippi"!!
http://www.toccoafalls.edu/consider/falls.htm

No wait... Taughannock Falls is: http://www.bbonline.com/ny/halsey/

But how can that be? Clearly Buckeye Falls is: http://volweb.utk.edu/volweb/school/unicoi/ucounty.htm

Of course Tahquamenon is! http://www.netcore.ca/~james/midwest/turtlecreek.html

But as I know for a fact, Amicalola is the "tallest east of the Mississippi": http://www.gastateparks.org/info/amicalola/

I realize that there are different definitions for a "waterfall", but this sounds like a lot of marketing to me.

I once had a huge painting job to be done on a large apartment complex. I inquired at the local building supply for someone that could handle the job. He gave me the name of a person and said he was the largest painting contractor in the SouthEast. I set up a meeting and quickly learned the guy was indeed the largest, he must have weighed 500 pounds, I still laugh at being had by the clowns at the store.

anyway...Waterfalls

There are longest single drops, multiple drops, also tallest may actually mean highest elevation the falls are at, falls in creeks, falls in rivers...etc, etc, etc. I am also confused and think about the largest paint contractor hoax when one clams to have the tallest waterfall.

I would very much like all the facts and data on waterfalls in the eastern U.S. from the smallest up. However, I have looked at several web sights, and books on the subject and it seems everyone has a different answer or observation. I have given up and just live by my statement "I've never met a waterfall I didn't like"

Then you need to hike the Foothills Trail in SC. More waterfalls per mile than just about any other trail.

I've hiked the FHT many times, plus all the trails in (Mountain Wilderness Area) Ceasar's Head, Table Rock and Jones Gap, and Jocassee Gorges area. I hate all the nice falls on Horsepasture Ck have been messed up by a developer. I live very close to the area and agree beautiful waterfalls are everywhere. Like I said "I never met a waterfall I didn't like"

Another couple of places I have hiked that I really enjoyed (speaking of waterfalls) was Desoto State Park. There are some big drops there. In the summer there are some daring adventurers that kayak the Little River Canyon there.

For those not familiar with the area, it is a interesting geological feature: a canyon on top of a mountain.

Some locals (and likely some from out of town too) jump off the falls down into the basin below. One kayaker even did it as a film stunt, and was knocked unconscious when his head hit the deck of his boat at the bottom. :jump

Another place that I found cool was Dismals Canyon. Check out the glowing 'dismalite' worms in the rock formations there at night. http://www.dismalscanyon.com/

Maybe. But Dunn Notch Falls in Maine is the prettiest -- and one only hikers with curiosity and a map are likely to see.

Reminds me of when I used to sell cars and would see the owner of the dealership on TV saying things like "Last month we sold over 5 times as many Jeeps as our closest competitor!" Now knowing that our Jeep sales were actually quite weak that month hearing this made me kind of curious, so I did a bit of checking and found out the the highest volume Jeep dealership in our market had sold 3 times as many Jeeps as we had that month. When I asked the general manager about this he cleared it up for me. He told me that while a dealership in our market had sold 3 times as many jeeps as we had in the month in question they weren't our closest competition as they were 2 miles further away than the dealership the company owner was referring to when he made that statment in the commercial. I then reminded him that the top selling dealership was actually closer to the dealership that I worked and his response was "not as the crow flies". About a month later I quit that job :D

For those in my area here's a webpage that lists a lot of waterfalls in the southern Appalachians: http://www.mountainstewards.org/waterfall.html

And a "marketing" story:

My dad once told me about a guy in Virginia near where he grew up that posted an ad in the local paper saying "Great Technology! Kill all pests within two blocks!! Send $50 to ...."

If you were unfortunate enough to send him money, he sent back 2 bricks with instructions to place the insect in between and crush it. "within two blocks". :-?
