Gregory Jade 50L ... but on a future hike i am looking into ULA.

As far as size, 50L was always plenty of space for everything I carried throughout my hike.

Good luck and happy trails!

I used a ULA pack last year. I love this pack will be using the same one for my hike this year starting 12th March.
Everything I needed winter and summer fitted including my tent. Full pack weight with 2 litres water and 5 days food came to 12 kilo's. Sorry can't remember what that was in lbs.

second the Osprey exos 46. When I needed a new pack last year, I had my heart set on ULA. But, when I tried them on in the store, they just didn't feel as good as the Osprey. I am very happy with the exos 46. It is plenty big enough for my full winter gear.

Try before you buy. The Exos 46 was the most painful experience (with 25#) I've ever experienced. Seems to work for others. Love my ULA packs. And my Gossamer Gear packs. And they're made in the USA.

What ski' said. I really wanted to like the Exos 58 as a winter pack, but 20 minutes of walking around REI with 20 pounds in it convinced me otherwise. The metal wrap frame on the hip belt dug into my hips in the most painful manner. Made for skinny guys, I suppose.

Yep, I had a 58 too. My skinny buddy loves it. Used the money to get a ULA Catalyst and Circuit. Pretty cool to call ULA (at that time) and talk to Brian. And Casey dug out my invoice to get my cell number and called me one night, after I emailed them with a question about the load lifter settings.

What kind of weight are you carrying?

I have an old Wild Things AT that fits me well.
I love my Golite.
But, trying to go SUL....? I love my Z-Pack, too.

I currently have an Osprey Aether 60 and ULA Circuit, the Aether being the more superior pack in my view, however the ULA weight and simplicity makes it my first choice as I don't carry alot of weight and it's shortcomings are not as noticeable with 23lbs on my back.

Hey gipcgirl, it's Cerveza! You had a super light pack as I recall. I hope to do the same on future thru hikes. What model did you use?

Good luck on your 2011 thru!

It's essentially a Jam2. Or like someone said in this thread, a less adjustable Talon (my Talon 22 is the most comfortable day pack I've ever had). http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=34480 That super skinny hip belt killed me in the Exos series, so I'll be sticking with my made in the USA Mariposa Plus, Gorilla, or ULA CDT. I get an Osprey pro-form, I should probably buy something from them though.

I'm also looking for a pack in the 60L range for around $200

I looked at the Exos 58 and the Flash 65. The latter is probably too big, but is still very light and not too expensive.

You all have piqued my interest in the ULA packs. I need to see if there is a place to try them out.

Had this since 2006. Used it for AT 1,000 mi 2010. Great pack, with the lid 40 oz. Have to hang my tent outside in a stuff sack--will use on Colorado Trail this summer. This gets my vote.

I love my REI Flash 65. Very comfortable and only 3lbs, 2lbs if you remove the lid and frame sheet.$169. But if your a member you can take your dividend + 20% off now. Plus if you decide you don't like it after hiking with it take advantage of REI's liberal no questions asked, can return any time for any reason return policy.

Arcteryx Bora 40. I know 40 is small, but I am good for up to a week with it and I carry a full size 2 person tent (fits nicely in the hydration pocket).

+1 on the Deuter!

Yeah, after looking at more specs I've added the Deuter ACT lite 65+10 and the Aether 60 to the list to try.

I'll take my base gear to the store and try packing the various packs to see which I like better. Some back spasms this morning so I might have to put it off a day or two.

I was using a 50L pack that had an odd design with a lot of the volume in side pockets and a smaller main pocket. To know what is going to work I need to just load them up and try. I keep thinking 65L is a ton of volume, but several of the packs are compressible for smaller loads.

my complete list to check is
Aether 60
Deuter ACT lite
Exos 58
Flash 65

If I find them too big I'll go back down to 50L models, but doubt I'll go smaller than that.

i really like my osprey atmos 50, i have it in the large so it's 53 liters and with osprey they only count the main compartment and the lid into that 53 liters, so the 2 side pockets that run the length of the pack, the large mesh pocket on the outside, the two mesh pockets on the side and the pockets on the hip belt will add to that number in actuality, very comfortable pack, 3lb6oz.

If you find the Flash 65 too big, check out the Flash 50, same pack less volume.

I have an Atmos 50, which I love, but 30 lbs is pushing its suspension. Food for a couple more days would make it tough to haul ... I looked at the Exos 58, which certainly has more capacity, but it is rated at the same weight capacity as the Atmos.

Guess I just need to keep my total pack weight down to under 30! (Maybe I can jam a few more things into my pant's pockets)

I hope you guys that suggested the Deuter ACT lite were right.

I had it narrowed down to the Aether and the Deuter ACT and the Deuter just fit better with my gear and it was lighter and cheaper.
