I plan to do the first 100 miles of the AT on the Long Trail in August. Are there bear cables or poles at the shelters?

I've been seeing your name on here and, I believe, Trail Place for years.
no bear cables, some shelters on the LT have large "Bear boxes", basicaly large metal storage bins with locking lids where hikers can store their food at night

I walked all 273 miles of the LT last year and I saw only a couple lumps of bear ***** during the entire hike. The first traces were when I was climbing Mt Horrid (before Middlebury Gap) and the only other traces were on Journey's End Road.
I'll sleep with my food, thanks.

No cables from when I thruhiked in '07 (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=205426) but I wouldn't worry about bears. during my hike, there was a rumor of a "problem bear" around Seth Warner Shelter but I stayed there and didn't see it nor any evidence.
Seth Warner indeed had a serious bear problem in 2009. I believe that is when a bear box was installed. 2010 was mostly free of bear issues at that spot.

One of the funnier posts I've seen on here for a while. :D
