Hiya folks!

So, I'm planning on doing a section hike in January (GA/NC/TN area) and I'm wondering what critters I'll be needing to protect my food from.

Specifically, what are the shelter mice up to this time of year?

Thanks,

Dahlia

You shouldn't have a critter problem this time of year. Even the shelter mice are pretty sleepy. Maybe one or two will be about, just hang your food from the tuna cans.

I saw shelter mice all the way into mid-December on my thruhike. Use the hangers just in case.

My last couple of times around shelters here and in NC I have not seen any mice. Must be hibernating.

If you see large lumps of shredded material, perhaps in a protected place under the shelter, there are probably mice inside them, and when they emerge they will bring babies with them.

Apparently you Southerners don't get to hike in the snow very often. One of the delights in winter hiking are the various tracks seen, including mice. They are active all year long and as food is more scarce, hang your food. In addition, check your pockets before turning in or you may have visitors.

Maybe our southern mice get out of here when it is too cold as well ;)
